Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was a columnist and then a political reporter at The State Press.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No, I don't think I have. I may have for theatre back in high school, but I don't remember so.

How is social media changing news?

It's making everyone both a consumer and sharer of news. IT's a lot easier to share a new story now.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lois Lane

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To tell truthful narratives and communicate the stories that need telling.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#partylikeajournalist is pretty good.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

In person

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Lots of google, SLACK, DSLR and mirrorless cameras.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter, by far.

Who do you wish followed you?

I have my dream follows already, but I'd add Daniel Victor (NYT) and Mark Berman (WaPo) to my list.

Why did you become a journalist?

To tell the truth in a mass format and do work I enjoy.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was homeschooled, so I made my own neighborhood paper which folded after one semester.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'm most proud of the job I served as editor of State Press politics last semester and how we held USG accountable

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Keep pursuing every possible avenue. Learn every talent you can. The more you know and can do, the better.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Mornings or late late night after a long conversation.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

A reporter wanted to investigate and write about USG breaking their bylaws!

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

One time a reporter pitched me on writing about celebrities who were political, then quit. The pitch was OK, but the quitting was a bummer.

What's your favorite drink?

Press Coffee, four corners blend, brewed over a chemex.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Behind a camera or with family

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Washington Post.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

People don't take into consideration the humanity of reporters. Family of a journalist will trust them, but doubt others. We're all human
