Described as having an instrument that can "do anything” (British Pianist, Graham Johnson), Mitchell is a musician and freelance music journalist in the South Florida region.

Mitchell is a former resident artist of Opera Saratoga, Des Moines Metro Opera, Pensacola Opera, Charlottesville Opera, Dicapo Opera Theatre, and Opera Maine. Performance highlights include the title role in Gianni Schicchi with Charlottesville Opera, John Proctor in The Crucible with Hartford Opera Theater, Michele in Il tabarro with Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre, Schaunard in La bohème with Gulfshore Opera, Escamillo in La tragédie de Carmen with Pensacola Opera, Ben in The Telephone with Opera Saratoga, Father in Ragtime with Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre, and he was “exemplary” (Sylva Herald) in the title role in Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, under the direction of Terrence Mann, where “his range and presence commanded attention any time he was on stage” (Sylva Herald).

Mitchell holds degrees from Florida State University, Western Carolina University, and the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music. He is an Associate Professor at Florida Atlantic University.
