Frank Bruno "I would rather fight (Lennox) Lewis five days a week' than face Tyson again."

He DID give Lewis a better fight in the one time that he met him than he did in BOTH of the nights he fought Tyson. Your name or email address: Do you already have an account? What if Lennox stayed a Canadian as a pro?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . He famously won gold for Canada at the '88 Olympics. However, rather than continue representing Canada after turning pro, he decided to move back to the UK because he said there would be more resources available there than in Canada to pursue a pro career. However, he ended up spending a lot of his time training in the US anyways, and achieved his biggest success under Emanuel Steward.
Would Liston have had more success in the 50s?
Liston made his name in the 60s, but by then he was already in his 30s, with suspicions that he was a few years older than reported. It's possible he was only a few years older than Rocky Marciano, but he lost a few years of his career that decade due to prison. When he fought in the 60s, with guys like Ali now around, the great size/reach advantage he'd have had a decade earlier wasn't so pronounced anymore. What if prime Liston had been taking on the 1950s HWs?
Who was a bigger star in the 1920s Jack Dempsey or Babe Ruth?

Why is it not held against Holmes legacy more that he was never the undisputed HW champion of boxing
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Not being on that prestigious list seems like a big deal in my view. A couple of reaskns, I think: 1. There were two titles at the time he become champion - the WBC and WBA (IBF came later and WBO came post Holmes’s title reign). He beat Ken Norton who was mightily unlucky to lose to Ali in their rubber match and Ali retired. He then beat Ali in 1980 to confirm his lineal status as champion.
Moses vs Knyba?
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . How would you see this match-up go? I would see Knyba being taken out of the ring on a stretcher after 3 rounds max. My biggest concern with Moses is he doesn't seem to actually love boxing
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Boxers who improved their stamina as they aged?
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . It was somewhat disturbing seeing the 21 year old Itauma wheeled out on a stretcher due to exhaustion, especially at an age when you'd think a trained athlete would have some of their best cardio. Have there been any notable boxers who started their careers with shaky cardio and then turned themselves into ironmen, or close to it? George Foreman is the first guy to come to mind.

Which is a bigger shame, never seeing prime AJ vs prime Fury or prime AJ vs prime Wilder?
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Which was the bigger missed fight of the 2010s HW era? Clearly wilder vs joshua. It had the makings of a hagler vs hearns dynamic at heavy. Since both had great offense and mediocre defense the only viable gameplans would have been to land first. A short heavyweight slugfest with multiple close calls in the beginning maybe? Would have loved to see it. Your name or email address: Do you already have an account? No, create an account now.
Is Joshua-Fury still an intriguing fight as nobody is sure who has declined worse at this stage?
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Fury takes his tune-up, every one says he's washed beyond belief and will be splattered by AJ... AJ takes his tune-up, and now he's actually the one who is the most washed and would be finished by Fury. Is it a battle of the declines that still makes this fight interesting? Yeah, that exactly why this IS an intriguing fight. Sometimes these aging warhorses put on good, memorable fights Joeywill and Timur Attlee like this.
What do you believe is the ideal size for a HW boxer?
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . We’ve seen outliers in one direction or the other, but in 2026, what do you think are the ideal measurements and proportions for a heavyweight? Height, weight, reach, etc. I think it depends on their other attributes. I don't think there's a universal ideal size. Your name or email address: Do you already have an account? Why did young George Foreman look so big even at relatively low listed weights?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Look at Foreman in his first fight with Frazier, the size of his frame, the muscles, the upper and lower body. Yet, he apparently only weighed in at 217.5 lbs for this fight, somehow only 3 lbs heavier than little Joe. He looks much bigger than Usyk who's usually ~10 lbs heavier than that. Why does the "eye test" say young Foreman was bigger than his listed weights?

Who would have been Ali's toughest matchup among boxers he never fought?
Lewis Holmes Wladimir Usyk Tyson Lewis/Wladimir for being highly skilled Super Heavyweights with 1 punch KO power. Holmes for having a better jab than Ali plus Holmes would be the best technical fighter he's ever fought. Usyk because of the fact he's a unique southpaw Heavyweight ATG with superb skills. Tyson because he's basically a faster, bigger, more explosive version of Frazier with a better variety to his offence. Non ATG Heavyweights who I think would trouble Ali aswell.
Is it fair to say Wilder has got his aggression back?
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Sloppy fight or not, Wilder seemed to get back to his aggressive swinging and clubbing style, which had been the bread and butter of his whole career. In his last few fights before Chisora, it felt like the ayahuasca had gotten too much to his head and he had the demeanor of a hippie in the ring. Yeah, but the power isn't quite there to back it up. Maybe, as Kirk points out, it's the timing. No, Wilder is cooked.
Would USSR boxers have changed the HW golden age of the 70s?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Did we miss out on the 70s equivalents of Usyk and the Klitschko brothers in the 60s and 70s because of Cold War politics? Do you think the American greats would have been able to maintain their dominance in that era without the iron curtain restrictions? -edit- we’d also likely have had Cuban boxers in the mix as well, conceivably. Contrary to recent statements from Floyd, the Pacquiao rematch is contracted as a PRO FIGHT
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . This content is protected Floyd can fight like he's in an exhibition but you know Manny will be coming for his head. Mayweather is already spreading lies because he’s scared. If he loses, his 0 goes, and Pacquiao becomes the undisputed GOAT. PACMAN, YOU’VE GOT THIS. LET’S GO, CHAMP. Still if Floyd said that it means hes having buyers remorse and might pull out if he can't get it switched to exhibition.
Ali's legacy had he retired in 1973?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . I was watching Norton vs Ali 2 and the announcers were saying Ali would likely retire if he lost back to back fights with Ken Norton. If he did, how is his legacy viewed today? Still with his dominant but brief reign in the 60s but with no solid comeback career to define his 70s era. Your name or email address: Do you already have an account? No, create an account now. Would Ali not have been Ali had he sat down on his punches and went to the body more?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . I've heard the defense that Ali attempting almost no body shots and staying light on his feet, rather than sitting down on his punches, was necessary for his overall style and strategy. If Ali had looked to incorporate both of those a bit more, however, surely he’d still have been successful based on his overall talent.

Mayweather vs Pacquiao in 2026, who wins?

Pacquiao vs Inoue fight at 122
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Super bantamweight champ Manny vs Inoue, how does this fight go? Post-prison Mike with the best trainers and team possible, how far does he go?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Mike was still only 28 when he was released from prison, and physically he still appeared to be in excellent shape. In fact, he looked slightly more defined and muscular than he had in his pre-prison years. The bigger issue seemed to be mental rather than physical, and that decline had already begun before his conviction.
How would post-prison Mike do in today's HW scene?
In my opinion he was totally shot and had a manufactured career out of prison, and it was not only age, the inactivity of prison, and wear and tear, but drugs and apathy. His best win was Bruno, which is respectable, but Bruno himself has suffered multiple stoppage losses at that point. The rest is Seldon, Botha...guys of that caliber. He would not only lose every round to Usyk, but to a handful of these guys. To be clear, Tyson between Berbick and Spinks was an ustoppable wrecking ball.
What does Wilder mean to Fury's legacy?
Fans and history remember great fights. They don't remember resume's. They don't remember belts. They don't remember how much you got paid. Fury Wilder HW trilogy in terms of pure entertainment and drama is pretty much GOAT'd - ABOVE Ali Frazier's legendary trilogy which is quite a statement. Fights where you can rewatch it multiple times are what history remembers. Fury 1, fairly lackluster in till the end rounds and a legendary 12th round.
In hindsight how do you view Lewis-Tyson?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . I rewatched it recently and a couple things struck me, Tyson looked incredibly washed but he made it to the 8th round and as late as the 7th round, Lewis' corner was absolutely pleading with him to finish Mike off as they still appeared quite worried Mike could still land a shot that could take Lewis out, if the fight went on any further. Boxers who were notorious for thumbing of the eyes?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Eye pokes are often an issue in MMA due to the exposed fingers, with some fighters more associated with using that tactic than others. In boxing, it wasn’t until the 1980s that gloves were mandated to have thumb attachments to control their movement. Before that, were there fighters who became notorious for using thumb pokes as a tactic? Holmes got in trouble a bit Holmes, Ali, Pedroza, Duran, Pep, Saddler, Zivic .....
Would Big Tom Aspinall have any success in boxing?
Discussion in 'MMA Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Tom's father/coach has laid out the plan for Tom to fight out the remaining 3 fights under his UFC contract and then venture into boxing This content is protected I think so. Fury respected his boxing ability iirc, he’s stupidly quick and powerful for such huge man which could work for him against the more hittable guys. However, he also has the tendency to brawl and abandon technique.
Why didn't Cotto sue Margarito?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Using loaded wraps/gloves could arguably be viewed as assault and it arguably derailed his career costing him millions of future earnings. MixedMartialLaw said: ↑ Using loaded wraps/gloves could arguably be viewed as assault and it arguably derailed his career costing him millions of future earnings. Click to expand... Because It was never proven that Margarito used loaded wraps/gloves vs Cotto that's why.
Don King claims George Foreman threated to drop out the day before the Rumble fight
“This is all vintage George Foreman; he’s done this before,” King said. “The day before the Ali fight, he sent someone to tell me he wanted another $500,000 or he wouldn’t fight. So we sent one of his men, Leroy Jackson, to London, to see our banker there. “I called the banker before Jackson got there and told him to stall him, but to let him think he’d get the money. “In the meantime, George gets a visit by the Zaire Army.
Dana White announces Zuffa Boxing will have its own belt and will NOT recognize the other bodies

Would Ali have won the FOTC had he taken more tune up fights before?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Following his over 3 year layoff, Ali only fought twice before he faced Fraizer for the world heavyweight title. What if Rocky came back in 1959 as was considered?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . He trained for four months to fight Johannson before deciding against the comeback. Could the Rock have mounted a second career into the 60s, like Foreman did? I think Johannson stops him late, too much time off the ring and his first bout against a proper elite boxer in their prime. He’d lose to anyone noteworthy. I don’t think it would have ended well for him. He had the type of style and body build that didn’t age well.

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Usyk has shown that the prototypical sized heavyweight from the 1970s to early '90s is still the ideal build to dominate the division. He’s beaten all the present day giants, yet most heavyweights today still show up with their guts hanging over their shorts, weighing in above 240 pounds. Even Joseph Parker, who absolutely deserves the fight with Usyk, recently decided to bulk up well past 260. Why aren't they getting the memo?
Should Lennox Lewis get more credit for the development he took with his body?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by MixedMartialLaw, . Lewis turned pro as a lanky 23 year old who weighed below 230 lbs despite being 6'5". He eventually built himself up by around 20 lbs with pretty much all muscle gain, as opposed to someone like Bowe who just put on fat in his weight gain. Lewis pretty much set-up the template for the modern tall boxers to not be sticks or fat. Your name or email address: Do you already have an account? No, create an account now.
