BAT May Step Up Pouch Production in Hungary
British American Tobacco may expand production of nicotine pouches at its factory in Pecs, Hungary, reports the Budapest Business Journal, citing the state news wire MTI. The move would make the Pecs tobacco factory the biggest producer of pouches in the BAT group. Under the plan, Pecs’ cigarette manufacturing operations would be moved to other factories within the group.

Study: Modern Oral Less Toxic Than Other Tobacco Products
British American Tobacco (BAT) has published a new study in Food and Chemical Toxicology showing that modern oral products (MOPs) elicit lower toxicity responses than traditional tobacco products. Velo, one of BAT’s nicotine pouch products, was compared with a traditional cigarette as well as a Swedish-style snus pouch and found to be “less biologically active than cigarette smoke and snus, even at greater concentrations of nicotine, across a range of tests,” according to a company press release.
RAI Submits Product Application for Velo Pouches
Reynolds American Inc. (RAI) has submitted a group of premarket tobacco product applications (PMTAs) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeking orders authorizing the marketing of Velo pouches. A grant of these marketing orders would allow these products to remain on the market after FDA review. Velo is the group’s brand for modern oral products, designed to provide adult tobacco consumers with innovative alternatives to traditional combustible and smokeless tobacco products.
U.S. Modern Oral Sales up in August
According to a tobacco analysis report from New York-based Cowen, based on Nielsen data, modern oral dollar sales were up 165.6 percent year to year.for the four weeks ending on Aug 8, compared to 179.7 percent in the last 12 weeks. The report added that volumes were up 216.8 percent year to year for the four-week period and 238.6 percent compared to last year for the last 12 weeks.
