Horse and Rider | Summer 2025 Having control of your horse's feet is key to staying safe on the trail. When your horse is unsure or spooked by an obstacle, not having that control can quickly turn into a dangerous situation. That's why I like to simulate trail scenarios at home, so I can work through them with my horse in a calm, controlled environment. Of course, even with plenty of practice, things can still go sideways once you're out on the trail.
Reframing resilience as a systemic issue: Meta‐competencies that transform individuals and learning ecologies
You cannot understand a system until you try to change it. Kurt Lewin (1942) 1 INTRODUCTION Education is a dynamic, adaptive system within a broader social, political and economic system, which does not favour our youth's well-being. Indeed, today's educational institutions are experiencing a crisis in student well-being that cannot be ignored (Brennan et al., 2021; OECD, 2017; Schwartz et al., 2021).
What Are You Looking At?
It’s a common thing that happens to riders. You go to get on your horse, and he immediately starts dancing around and looking at everything going on around him, rather than focusing on what you’re asking him to do. Your immediate response is to grab the reins and force him to stand still. But instead of quieting down, your horse just gets more anxious and starts dancing around even more.
Arena Exercises for Fun & Problem-Solving
You’ve got the arena to yourself, so you settle your horse into a nice warm-up jog, moving along the rail. Soon, you reverse, jog in the other direction, circle a few times…and your mind begins to wander. Schooling in circles can be boring—for you and your horse. And if your mind is wandering, chances are, his is too. Products we feature have been selected by our editorial staff. If you make a purchase using the links included, we may earn a commission. Growing Up Western
Yup, starting a family in this crazy world. That’s what taught me to truly appreciate the months of my younger years spent traveling the rodeo trail with my parents. By raising a daughter in the Western world, she’s going to learn how to work hard, set goals, and be relentless in the pursuit of what she wants. Showmanship Tune-Up
Showmanship at halter tests you and your horse’s ability to confidently work as a team and execute a series of maneuvers on the ground. The great part about this class is that most horses of all price points can do it. I’ve seen horses that compete in reining, English, and Western pleasure events all be successful in showmanship. Check In With Your Horse During the Warm Up
As you warm your horse up, you should also be using that time to check in on him to ensure that his focus is on you and not everything else happening in the arena. Having your horse’s attention on you and what you’re asking him to do during the warmup is important. It will help you figure out what you need to work on during your actual riding session. If you ask him to focus his attention on you and he’s stiff going one direction, or dull to your leg, make a mental note.
Tips to Make Longeing More Effective
Whether you’re at home or at a show, you always want your horse to be well-mannered. Good manners learned early will pay a lifelong dividend in pleasurable riding. And they can be invaluable aids in many specific situations, such as rehabilitation, as your horse ages. Consider these points in order to get the most out of longeing. 1. RESPECT. Once you’ve attached anything to your horse that connects you to him, you require a certain level of respect from your horse.
