Prysmian seeks assurances before building Somerset plant
THE PRYSMIAN GROUP says it wants to push ahead with plans to open a manufacturing facility at Brayton Point in Somerset to serve the emerging offshore wind industry, but it wants assurances before doing so. "To invest, Prysmian needs certainty that future Massachusetts projects will utilize local assets such as in-state manufacturing," said Hakan Ozmen, an executive vice president of the company, in a filing with state officials.
The dirty truth of Northfield Mountain's 'clean' energy
ON FEBRUARY 11, CommonWealth published a commentary by FirstLight Power CEO Alicia Barton bragging of the Christmas Eve grid-rescuing heroics of her company's Northfield Mountain Pumped Storage Station. She went on to describe Northfield as a "zero-emissions" power plant that helped save New England from a natural gas energy squeeze. There were holes in her contentions, and she failed to mention all the other elephants in the room.
Senate leader calls for banning Avangrid from future projects
THE SENATE'S top budget official is calling for Avangrid to be banned from bidding on any future projects in the state if it terminates its current offshore wind contract. Avangrid agreed to the terms of a 20-year power purchase agreement last year and just before it won final regulatory approval the company stepped forward to say the economy had shifted and it needed more money to make the contract to build Commonwealth Wind work.
Pushing back against the defenders of natural gas
WE TAKE exception to Arnold Wallenstien's recent commentary, in which he argues against a rapid transition from gas to renewable energy. First, he fails to consider the alternative to a rapid transition, which is climate chaos. He talks about "climate zealots" as if they were a fringe group who focus on exaggerated concerns and ignore reality. In fact, it is Wallenstein who is ignoring the emerging reality of the climate crisis.
