#1 Hey Guys i'm going to get into C++ so I can program WinMob and having ordered Programing Windows by Petzold, I quickly realised this is not a "learn c++" book. Can anyone recommend a book to take me from knowing nothing to genious please? I have assembler experience so not a total newbie but haven't done any for over 15 years! England Cricket team bought ME beer & I've thrown beer over Simon Cowell.
DVLA have lost my motorcycle entitlement
#1 I have just received my replacement drivers licence (lost the original) and noticed that my category A motorcycle entitlement is missing. All other categories are present and correct. I telephoned DVLA and was told that they have no record of me ever passing the motorbike test, although they do have records of me passing the two other tests I took! I was eventually told to send a letter explaining everything along with my new licence to them.
Question - 85UXK (European Model/144hz/Vidaa OS) - Best Screen Settings?
Hi All, Just got my hands on a Hisense 85UX european model - 144hz (actually, it claims 240 in the settings!), Vidaa OS - but I'm struggling to find the best picture quality. I've watched a certain other site YouTube review (hey Caleb!) and selected their recommended which is Cinema Day and Warm 1 but the picture feels really washed out. I've tried boosting the saturation and dropping the contrast (Contrast adapting to low as well as of) but, it just feels off.
Killing all apps when screen off!!!! ARGHH!
#1 OK - so, unless you have a Chinese phone number, you can't log in to My Oppo which means, i'm told, you can't change the launcher and the built in launcher is a real piece of human solid waste. Anyway, on to the subject... No matter what setting i select, it kills off tasks like Gmail, WhatsApp, Timely etc. when the screen turns off and doesn't restart them until i OPEN the app again! I mean, seriously1?!?!?!111ELEVENTY!?! WTF!?
Fossil Warranty - scum
#1 So, on holiday in Orlando in March. Bought a Fossil Q Control. Told the guy i live in Bahrain (middle east) and he said that they have international warranty. Boswellocks do they, scum. Design fault: the action button is too close to the sensor and ends up getting locked causing a constant reboot. It's hardware design issue. Over email Fossil offered a refund/swap. A week later still nothing back so I phoned them today.
DrivePool/Bender - Alternatives with Parity protection?
#1 Hi Guys I currently use Storage Pools but having had a minor issue that needed googling I've discovered how unstable Storage Pools are and so want to get away from it ASAP! I've been looking at Drive Bender and DrivePool but they both only seem to offer mirroring protection? To me this is a major waste of space and I'd much rather use Parity checking. Do these products offer this or are there any others that will work with any current MS operating system?
Wear OS and Huawei Phones (P40 Pro)?
#1 Hey guys, I'm struggling to find an answer to this and thought you guys might know. I've got a Suunto 7 which is Google's Android Wear OS. I'm very tempted to buy a Huawei P40 Pro in the next couple of days but, obviously, Google ban. Can I side load Google Mobile Services and Wear app on to Huawei phones and still get full watch integration/functionality?
Question - HP Spectre - Screen Burn - except it's not!
#1 Hey Guys! I've got a HP Specter that has an AMD/Intel Vega M in it. Up until maybe a month ago it's been working fine but, for some reason, I'm getting what looks like a screen burn issue - except it's NOT screen burn as it moves with the Windows/mouse! So, what happens is that some of the Windows now appear to be transparent to a degree, in some cases I can see through two or even three windows on top of each other, right to the desktop.

Question - G-Sync Not Appearing in NVid CP
Discussion in 'PC Gaming & Rigs' started by Monty Burns, Aug 20, 2019 at 6:05 AM. Hi Guys, I've just bought and installed an MSI Optix MAG341CQ which I believe is on the APPROVED G-Sync/Freesync list as per the bottom of this list: List of MSI FreeSync Monitors Compatible with NVIDIA G-Sync - ThePCEnthusiast No matter what I try, I cannot get the G-Sync option to appear in the Nvidia CP.
Fossil Smartwatches
Happy new year all! I really (did) love the Fossil Gen 3 Q Control, it looked great, ticked all the boxes of waterproof, swappable straps, always on screen/all-day battery ... really, loved it: https://i.imgur.com/4H9rUG9.jpg Well, in less than a year I'm now on my THIRD warranty watch (1 screen died, 2nd failed firmware update). Today I was sitting on the couch today and very quickly my Fossil ramped up the heat so much that I had to take the watch off because of the pain.
Question - Smartlock Newbie
Hey all! I've just started looking at smart locks for doors and get really juicy (yeah, I need to get out more) at the idea that my phones Bluetooth can be used by proximity to auto-unlock/lock a door. I started looking around and found a couple that replaces dead-locks but, I then realised my rented apartment doesn't have a dead lock and in fact, has another type of "all in one" handle and lock system.
Sedative/Twilight Dentistry - anyone done it?
Hey all! I am petrified of the dentist and, to make it worse, every time i've gone my post nasal drip goes in to overdrive causing me to constantly...
New watch - New fitness app (Android)
Hey guys, I've had a Polar M600 android watch with H7 Chest strap for a couple of years and it's worked great. But it looks like a kids watch from...
Hayfever jab (Kenalog) and my GP "we don't have that here"
Hey Guys last summer was a write off for me. I went into the GP's at least 6 times on an almost by weekly timing because of hayfever and each time I was sent packing with "try this" (basicaly an off-the-shelf tablet/spray/drops).
"Ferguson Effect" Triggers Nationwide "Crime Wave"
Two weeks ago, we took a look at Baltimore in the aftermath of violent protests that left the city in ashes late last month. The astonishing statistic: from April 27 to May 14, there were 23 homicides in the city, for an average of 1.3 each day.
When Stock Buybacks Go Horribly Wrong
When companies have a burning need to boost their stock price and/or have no organic growth opportunities requiring fresh investment, they do one thing: engage in stock buybacks (usually funded with recently issued bonds). We first warned about the dangers of such a "strategy" in 2012, and most recently, earlier today the WSJ once again noted that "U.S. Firms Spend More on Buybacks Than Factories." The reality is that stock buybacks are great... as long as the stock price keeps rising.
"Above The Law" Fed Subpoena'd By Hensarling Over 2012 Leak "To The Priveleged Few"
Having missed the deadlines and ignored demands for details surrounding the leak of the 2012 FOMC Minutes to an outside newsletter writer, The "above the law" Fed is now facing more problems: An immovable object just met an unstoppable faorce. Perhaps this means we get to see the list of names who had contact with Medley Global Advisors (that The Fed said they would hand over only in the case of secrecy).
The Economist "Buries" Gold
In early May, the Economist has published an editorial on gold, ominously entitled “Buried”. We wanted to comment on it earlier already, but never seemed to get around to it. It is still worth doing so for a number of reasons. The Economist is a quintessential establishment publication.
US Foreign Policy In One Photo
Un-Photoshopped Reuters photo sums up US foreign policy perfectly as Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani, representing the Gulf Co-operation Council, appears to leave U.S. President Barack Obama hanging during a welcome ceremony at the White House this week. And if you are really conspiratorial, crude prices and precious decoupled this week as Persian Gulf leaders arrived at Camp David... What hurts "America" the most?
A Generational Storm Is Coming
Yesterday, we began our high-minded graduation speech to the Class of 2015. We explained how the young graduates were not only the most heavily indebted in history, but also the least likely to be able to pay their debts. Median wages have been going down since these graduates were about five years old … So have economic growth rates. Today, we continue the speech no one wants us to give … A drone firing on cave dwellers in the Hindu Kush.
Major U.S. Retailers Are Closing More Than 6,000 Stores
Submitted by Michael Snyder via The Economic Collapse blog, If the U.S. economy really is improving, then why are big U.S. retailers permanently shutting down thousands of stores? The “retail apocalypse” that I have written about so frequently appears to be accelerating. As you will see below, major U.S. retailers have announced that they are closing more than 6,000 locations, but economic conditions in this country are still fairly stable.
Draghi Tells Euro Shorts To "Make His Day", Again
With a “defiant” Syriza determined to hold onto any shred of dignity and legitimacy that may remain in the wake of months of painful negotiations with its creditors and with a €5 billion advance from Russia (a large chunk of which will promptly be paid to the IMF which use it to bailout Ukraine which will hand it right back to Russia) shaping up to be the last lifeline for Greece before Athens is reduced to issuing IOUs to pay pensions and salaries, the focus is beginning to shift away from...
The Sun And The Economy
Submited by Erico Matias Tavares of Sinclair & Co. The Sun and the Economy How’s this for a provocative thought: what if the very earthly economic cycles somehow responded to the solar cycle? Unusual as this may sound, actually there is evidence of a relationship between the two. The solar cycle is produced by dynamo processes within the Sun.
Mass Whale Beaching Re-Ignites Quake Fears Among Japanese
Six days prior to Japan's devastating 2011 undersea earthquake that killed over 18,000 people, around 50 melon-headed whales - a species that is a member of the dolphin family - beached themselves on Japan’s beaches.
Don't Cry For Argentina, It's The Greeks That Suffered The Most In March
Venezuela, Argentina, and... China? are the 3 best performing stock markets in March in USD terms (with Ukraine close behind). It is the Greeks that have borne the brunt of global derisking through The Ides, Athens Stock Index down over 15% and the worst-performing stock market in the world for March. Year-to-date, Russia joins the 3 amigos at the top of the list (up almost 11% in USD terms) and Ukraine remains the clear laggard, down almost 33% in USD terms.
"Market Is Hyper Overpriced" Warns Retiring Fed President; "Significiant Correction" Coming
Fresh from a well-publicized dollar dispute with Goldman’s Gary Cohn, recently retired Dallas Fed chief Richard Fisher made an appearance on CNBC Friday and spoke with Rick Santelli. There were quite a number of notable exchanges including the following zingers.. Santelli: “If you had to rate the US economy 0-10 where would you peg it?” Fisher: “We’re #1., we’re a 10.
Bill Ackman Faces FBI Probe Over Possible Herbalife Stock Manipulation
Herbalife stock is up over 5% after hours after WSJ reports Bill Ackman (among others) made false statement about Herbalife's business models to regulators - in order to spur investigations into the company and lower its stock price. This comes just months after Ackman kinda-sorta-didn't-really insider-trade in the Allergan 'scam' that we detailed here. We suspect Whitney Tilson (and his Lumber Liquidators positions) is getting a little nervous now.
The Global Dollar Funding Shortage Is Back With A Vengeance And "This Time It's Different"
The last time the world was sliding into a US dollar shortage as rapidly as it is right now, was following the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008. The response by the Fed: the issuance of an unprecedented amount of FX liquidity lines in the form of swaps to foreign Central Banks. The "swapped" amount went from practically zero to a peak of $582 billion on December 10, 2008.
The Water Wars Are Coming
Does a warning mean anything if nobody listens? With the precarious case of Lake Mead, doomsayers never seem to break the surface. For years, reports of the lake’s declining levels have popped up in the news. Yet residents of the surrounding area still refuse to listen. The latest report from the Interior Department is very troublesome: there is a 20% chance of water shortages for Nevada and Arizona in 2016 if the lake maintains current levels .
Shots Fired: Schauble Says "Greeks Certainly Will Have A Difficult Time To Explain The Deal To Their Voters"
Did anyone honestly not think the German finance minister would not have the final word? What is the Greek FinMin's reponse?
"The Fed Is Heading For Another Catastrophe... Central Banking Has Lost Its Way" Stephen Roach Warns
Authored by Stephen Roach, originally posted At MarketWatch via Project Syndicate, America’s Federal Reserve is headed down a familiar — and highly dangerous — path. Steeped in denial of its past mistakes, the Fed is pursuing the same incremental approach that helped set the stage for the financial crisis of 2008-2009. The consequences could be similarly catastrophic.
European QE Postponed Indefinitely? Leaked EU Draft Shows "Lack Of Political Cover" For Draghi
One of the biggest wildcards for 2015 has been whether or not the ECB would proceed with US-style, "public debt" QE (considering the private QE has gone absolutely nowhere fast with just €21.5 billion in ABS and covered bonds monetized in the past few months) over both the objections of Germany and, increasingly, the ECB's governing council itself.
Cheap Oil A Boon For The Economy? Think Again
Submitted by Raul Ilargi Meijer via The Automatic Earth, I thought it might be a nice idea to question a certain someone’s theories using their own words, while at the same time showing everybody what the dangers are from falling oil prices. There are many ‘experts and ‘analysts’ out there claiming that economies will experience a stimulus from the low prices, something I’ve already talked about over the past few days in The Price Of Oil Exposes The True State Of The Economy and .
Explosive Excrement Topples Building In China, 15 Injured
Despite the best efforts of central planners, shit still happens (even in China). In an 'Onion-esque' story, China.org reports a cesspool filled with excrement exploded in a central Chinese city, injuring 15 residents and toppling a building on Saturday, police said. But this is not the only excrement-enthused event in China... A cesspool filled with excrement exploded in a central Chinese city, injuring 15 residents and toppling a building on Saturday, police said.
Summing It All Up In 1 Surreal Chart
As you can see by this view of the NQ, this massively bullish news has not, as of yet, represented any kind of sea-change in the markets. Before the day was even out (again, in some, not all markets...
Obama Nominee, Antonio "Tax Inversion" Weiss Discloses Up To $203 Million In Assets
It appears Lazard's investment banker Antonio Weiss' "help" in tax inversions is not 'unpatriotic' enough to scare President Obama off - as we suspect Weiss' bundling and donating help more than offset any ethical challenges.
"Irish Eyes Are Smiling" But Should They Be?
Ireland has been basking in the spot of an unusual sunshine this October. The cold spell, that normally takes the island over at the end of the month and into early November, coating it in a wet blanket of wind-swept and never ending rains was nowhere to be seen, replaced by the strangely regular appearances of the sun, blue skies and sight of the still leafy, colour-turned trees. Similarly, the markets have been kind to Ireland too.
Ukraine Currency Crashes After Senior EU Official Says "The Ukrainians Are Manipulating Us"
The much discussed tumble in the Russian ruble (or as Japan would call it "mission accomplished" if its was the Yen instead of the Ruble) may have stabilized somewhat, and judging by the Russian central bank's response to no longer intervene in the FX corridor-setting market on a daily basis, Russia is hardly too concerned by the impact to the economy as a result of the beating its currency has taken, but where Putin may have brushed off the "speculative" attack on its currency for the time...
Tim Geithner: "It Was A F$&king Disaster In Europe"
The name Tim Geithner has mercifully disappeared from the front pages, and instead has receded into the far more lucrative and circumspect confines of private equity behemoth Warburg Pincus. That doesn't mean that he is forgotten, and as the FT's Brussels Blog reveals, having "gotten its hands on...
