What was your first job as a journalist?
Not counting years of freelancing, I came in on production day to help proof pages.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, when I was learning to type in the early '90s. I have an antique one on my desk that works, too.
How is social media changing news?
It's less legit now that even idiots with no oversight or code have a voice and influence over other idiots.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
William in Almost Famous.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
I'll be heard.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Short email about the idea and who will be affected by it.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Field Notes brand notebooks. Panasonic Lumix mirrorless camera, and believe it or not, LibreOffice.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram for fun stuff, Twitter for serious and some fun stuff. I hate Facebook but it's a necessary evil.

Why did you become a journalist?
I wanted a voice on the topics that mean the most to me.

Sports Editor.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Stick to it so when the door opens, you're the obvious choice. I knew I wanted to work for WON when I was 17. I got there (full time) at 37.
What's your favorite drink?
Arizona Arnold Palmer. Bourbon and ginger. Craft beer. Coconut water.

All things Meateater. Outside, Men's Journal, Field and Stream.
