It seems a little unfair to spring four big releases on us in one week, especially this close to Christmas. But I suppose that you can justify the purchase of “Freaks,” “Hustlers,” “It: Chapter Two” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” as Christmas gifts to yourself. Collections this week include an eight-film Anne Bancroft box set and the five “The Fly” iterations. Usual rules apply: synopses are taken from the press releases and Amazon descriptions; snarky commentary is extra.

November 5 DVD roundup
For the first week of November, there sure seem to be a lot of films that would have been appropriate for Halloween in this week’s listing, including the Guillermo Del Toro produced “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.” If horror isn’t your thing, then you are invited to check out “Hobbs and Shaw,” “The Kitchen” or “The Art of Racing in the Rain.” Usual rules apply: synopses are taken from the press releases and Amazon descriptions; snarky commentary is extra.
Limited edition of “An American Werewolf in London” does the film justice
Back in 1981, we had just acquired our first VHS video cassette recorder. And thanks to the new concept of video rentals, I was able to see the uncensored versions of popular films at home. It amused my teenage mind that I could hear obscenities through the speaker on our TV set, along with female nudity, and my parents would be sitting calmly next to me, having seen it all before.
October 29 DVD roundup
It’s the release date before Halloween, so be sure to check out my list of Halloween flicks, if you missed it. There’s a few coming out this week as well, with a very impressive special edition of “An American Werewolf in London” leading the pack (pun sort of intended), plus the Japanese “Ringu” collection.
Halloween 2019 DVD roundup
This year’s (well, the last three months’ worth, anyway) collection of scary movies and TV shows for your Halloween evening (or any other time you feel like watching some scary entertainment). Usual rules apply: synopses are taken from the press releases and Amazon descriptions; snarky commentary is extra. Rotten Tomatoes ratings are included where available. Prices include Amazon links so you can purchase them online (and cheaper to boot!).
October 22 DVD roundup
This week’s big title is the rebooted “Lion King,” natch. But “The Dead Center” has some serious fans among the reviewer community, and the steelbook version of “Galaxy Quest” is worth it for anyone who needs an upgrade from their DVD copy (like I did). The four Daniel Craig James Bond films get 4K releases, and there are also several foreign films on tap. Usual rules apply: synopses are taken from the press releases and Amazon descriptions; snarky commentary is extra.

Happy Columbus Day. Hopefully you got the day off. In the meantime, we’re gearing up for Halloween, with most of the content for this week falling into that category. Usual rules apply: synopses are taken from the press releases and Amazon descriptions; snarky commentary is extra. Rotten Tomatoes ratings are included where available.

Rotten Tomatoes ratings are included where available. Prices include Amazon links so you can purchase them online (and cheaper to boot!).

Nothing mainstream this week, but we are gearing up for the Halloween season with titles such as “Itsy Bitsy,” “The Prey,” “Replace,” “Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island;” and my favorite title of the week, “Killer Sofa.” Usual rules apply: synopses are taken from the press releases and Amazon descriptions; snarky commentary is extra. Rotten Tomatoes ratings are included where available. Prices include Amazon links so you can purchase them online (and cheaper to boot!).
September 24 DVD roundup
Big titles this week include the reboot of “Child’s Play,” the sequel to the reboot of “Shaft,” and the reboot of the Beatles through the only man who remembers them in “Yesterday.” Plenty of horror reissues and other content on tap this week as well; the Halloween season is nearly here. (And yes, I’ll be posting my Halloween roundup next month.) Usual rules apply: synopses are taken from the press releases and Amazon descriptions; snarky commentary is extra.
September 17 DVD roundup
This week’s biggest title is the final “X-Men: First Class” film: “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.” We also have a few documentaries (Cassandro, The Exotico!, Danger God, The Kid’s Table, Mock & Roll); several foreign films (The Case of Hana & Alice, In The Aisles, Intimacy, Kung Fu League, Who Saw Her Die?); and some independent fare (Bottom of the 9th, Chicago Cab, Clownado). Enjoy. Usual rules apply: synopses are taken from the press releases and Amazon descriptions; snarky commentary is extra.
September 10 DVD roundup
Three mainstream titles: one well-received (“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”); one “Shoulda been great because of the cast…” (“The Dead Don’t Die”); and one “Enough with the live-action remakes already!” (“Aladdin” (2019)). Usual rules apply: synopses are taken from the press releases and Amazon descriptions; snarky commentary is extra. Rotten Tomatoes ratings are included where available.
