Interview

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lois Lane from the Superman universe. She has zero patience for red tape, isn't intimidated by complicated institutions, and relentlessly digs for the truth to stand up for the underdog. That drive to cut through bureaucracy and bring clarity to complex issues is something anyone trying to simplify tricky systems can appreciate.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I think nottheonion is the funniest because real news often sounds like a parody especially when dealing with government bureaucracy

What's your favorite social network?

Right now, Quora is absolutely my favorite platform. While platforms like Instagram or TikTok are great for quick awareness, Quora is where international students go when they are deeply stressed and actively searching for solutions regarding Dutch student finance. The DUO application process is full of nuances—like navigating the 56-hour work rule or submitting foreign parental tax documents. Quora allows me to cut through the noise and write detailed, authoritative answers that actually solve a student's immediate problem. It’s incredibly rewarding to demystify the Dutch bureaucracy for someone who feels stuck. Plus, it builds immense trust; when students see our deep expertise in our Quora answers, they feel completely confident letting myStudentFinance handle their application.

Who do you wish followed you?

I wish more international student advisors at Dutch universities and journalists covering European higher education followed me. While our primary audience is the EU and international students themselves, university advisors are often the first point of contact for students struggling with the cost of living. If more university staff and education reporters understood that services like myStudentFinance exist to safely navigate the DUO bureaucracy on a student's behalf—with absolutely zero upfront financial risk—we could collectively prevent thousands of talented students from dropping out due to financial stress. I’d also love to connect with expat community leaders in the Netherlands who are passionate about making the transition easier for newcomers.

When's the best time to pitch you?

The best time is during peak university intake seasons in August, September, and January when international students are arriving in the Netherlands. Midweek mornings work best if you have relevant stories or data regarding student living costs, Dutch education updates, or international student support.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

The absolute most common misperception I encounter is that Dutch student finance (DUO) is exclusively for Dutch citizens, or that the funds available to EU and international students are strictly loans that will leave them in massive debt.
