1 Introduction Marine capture fisheries contribute to global food security with landings of 90 million metric tonnes annually in the last decades (FAO, 2022; Watson, 2017). Fisheries operations support employment and trade but have also caused global concerns about the impacts of fishing on individual populations of harvested species, fish communities and the structure and function of the ecosystem (Jennings & Kaiser, 1998; Myers & Worm, 2003).
1 Introduction The swash zone is the region of the beach where waves run up and down the beach, connecting the submerged bed of the surf zone with the dry part of the beach. Here, the hydrodynamical forcing that drives sediment transport is not only controlled by what happens above the bed surface but, due to the porous nature of the sediment bed, is also influenced by interactions between the subsurface and surface flow (Masselink & Li, 2001).
