Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first job was at a company called Panda Gossips. I was a lifestyle writer and worked there for over 5 years.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No. I have never used a typewriter, but given a chance, I would love to try it out.

How is social media changing news?

Social media is both a blessing and a challenge for news. For instance, it has democratized information, allowing everyone to share news, connect with audiences, and break stories in real-time. However, the speed of social media can sometimes prioritize sensationalism over accuracy, and misinformation can spread quickly.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I’d have to go with Lois Lane from the Superman comics.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being a journalist means being a storyteller responsible for informing, engaging, and often challenging the status quo. It’s about seeking truth, digging deeper than surface-level headlines, and giving voice to the unheard.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

One of the funniest news-related hashtags I’ve come across is

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I appreciate pitches that are concise and well-researched. If you’ve taken the time to understand my work and can show why your story is a great fit, you already have my attention.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I use Google Docs for drafting because it's collaborative and cloud-based, perfect for editing on the go. I love using Grammarly to catch those sneaky typos for editing and proofreading. For design and visual content, Canva is my go-to, especially when I need to create quick graphics. I also use SEO tools such as SurferSEO and Ahrefs.

What's your favorite social network?

I love X (formerly known as Twitter).

Who do you wish followed you?

I would love to be followed by editors, publishers, and fellow writers who appreciate insightful, engaging, and well-researched content. Additionally, brands and media outlets looking for a skilled writer in my niche would be great connections. Ultimately, I value an audience that resonates with my work and sparks meaningful discussions.

Why did you become a journalist?

At first, I became a writer to make extra money, but I loved the profession so much that I became a full-time writer.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No. I did not write for my high school newspaper. I had other interests at that time, such as art. I started writing when I joined college.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'm most proud of a piece I wrote regarding mental health and how to cope with the struggles when treatment is not accessible.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

My advice to aspiring journalists is never to stop learning and questioning. The best journalists are always curious - about people, events, and the world around them.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I'm always available. 24/7.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

As a writer, I don't get many pitches as I'm the one who is always sending pitches while looking for work.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I'm yet to get a bad pitch. :)

What's your favorite drink?

My favorite drink has to be an iced matcha latte. It’s the perfect blend of energy and calm - great for fueling my travel adventures while still feeling like a little self-care ritual.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

When I'm not at a computer, you'll find me reading, traveling, or catching up with my family and friends.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I love reading about nature, so you will find me reading National Geographic.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

A common misperception about my beat is that it’s all about writing headlines and quick stories. It’s about researching, verifying sources, and understanding the bigger picture behind a story. The real work is in the details - the hours of investigation, the fact-checking, and the crafting of a narrative that’s accurate and meaningful. It’s not as glamorous as it may seem!
