Your gift list should include kindness at the top
We are bombarded early in the December season with products to buy for our friends and loved ones. It seems to be a mad dash to purchase gifts, decorations, food, flowers, cards, and anything to make our holiday special. We feel guilty if we don’t maintain a pace of holiday spending as we are constantly reminded that shopping is what it is all about at this time of the year with Black Friday beginning the frenzy, and the mad dash of shopping every day continuing until the 25th.
My Turn: In a world filled with negativity, the gift of laughter is priceless
As a child, I always enjoyed the many jokes my father would tell. Unfortunately, I can only remember bits and pieces of them, and wish I had recorded or written them down so I would have them today. Our family didn’t have much humor or laughter in our daily lives, so it was fun to hear them. It makes us feel good to experience a good joke or story and can lift our spirits. I have a real estate friend who posts jokes on Facebook frequently.
My Turn: Eclipse helped overshadow all the negativity
The recent frenzy over the total solar eclipse Aug. 21 was a wonderful change of pace. It seemed the entire nation was excited and happy about the anticipation of watching the sky to see about 2 minutes and 45 seconds of the eclipse. People traveled long distances to get to the totality trail, which occurred in 14 states, so they could be up close and personal to experience a phenomena that happens so rarely.
Breastfeeding in Children of Women Taking Antiepileptic Drugs: Cognitive Outcomes at Age 6 Years
Importance Breastfeeding is known to have beneficial effects, but concern exists that breastfeeding during maternal antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy may be harmful. We previously noted no adverse effects of breastfeeding associated with AED use on IQ at age 3 years, but IQ at age 6 years is more predictive of school performance and adult abilities. Objectives To examine the effects of AED exposure via breastfeeding on cognitive functions at age 6 years.
My Turn: Enjoy the holiday, but remember the fallen this Memorial Day
Who doesn’t like a parade, and Memorial Day gives us a chance to enjoy patriotic music, floats, military forces, and reminders of past wars while watching festivities. We as a nation should stop to think about the courage and sacrifice shown by the men and women who served our country. There are travels to see family and friends so we can celebrate and think about the heroes of our land who paid the price that freedom demands.
My Turn: Enjoy the rare wildflowers - they won’t be here long
I have been reading and hearing about the abundance of this spring’s wildflowers. Experts are saying it is connected with the heavy rains we experienced this winter, but, for whatever the reason, the mountains, hillsides, canyons and valleys are filled with the beauty of our California native flowers. Reports have described crowds in many areas of Southern California viewing wildflowers.
My Turn: Tackling that ‘stuff’ in the garage is worthy spring cleaning project
My husband surprised me recently by stating that all he wants for his end-of-the month birthday are cabinets for the garage. Unfortunately, there is lots of “stuff” stacked on the sides and front of our garage. Our daughter, who traveled for years, has about 50 large boxes filled with who knows what. They have become tattered, torn and almost falling upon each other because they are more than 20 years old.
My Turn: Giving at the holidays makes others feel loved
There is so much excitement as we get closer to the Christmas holiday. Sending cards, decorating, buying gifts, baking, cooking and mailing packages and cards help make the holidays festive. Schools have special programs, and there are tree lightings, parades, and visiting Santas. We could have something to do every day throughout the season. Yes, these things fill us with happiness and joy as we anticipate Dec. 25. However, to have true joy in our hearts, we need to give whatever we can to others.
My Turn: Is romance still in the air?
I have always loved to read British romantic novelists, including Jane Austen, Emily Bronte and Mary Shelley. It is intriguing to learn about how important courtship was in that day and time. A woman played a vital role in the selection of the man of her dreams. She was usually wooed, admired and sought after for long periods of time. Eventually, she chose her lifelong mate but not until she enjoyed the courting relationship.
My Turn: California a place where dreams become real
My husband and I decided very early in our married life that we wanted to someday live in California despite friends, family and even strangers warning us of the negatives. They would say it was too crowded, too expensive, too far and has too many taxes. We never wavered, and, once we were ready, off we went. We left behind many memories of places we had lived and people we had known, but we are so happy to be in California. The weather is remarkable year-round, with lots of sunshine and blue skies.
Fear of snakes has followed her for a lifetime
Because I grew up in the mountains of West Virginia, I had to deal with an abundance of snakes. Because we lived very near a mountain range, the rattlers and copperheads would make it to our yards, basements, roads, and many other places near our house. This would happen especially in summers and I always thought they might be looking for more water. I had a next-door neighbor boy a few years younger than myself who learned of my fear of reptiles.
Why sending thank-you cards after Christmas is worth the effort
This year I tried a new tactic at Christmastime as our two small granddaughters read the names on the packages under the tree and handed them one by one to the recipients. My two daughters and I wrote down the name of the gift and the sender’s name so we would have a record for thank-you notes. Not long after the holiday, I begin the writing of thank-you cards even though, in today’s world, this gesture may seem old-fashioned.
How holiday perfectionism can ruin Christmas
The pressure to be perfect intensifies at this time of the year. We think about the perfect celebrations and try hard to make it happen. We hunt for the perfect gifts and plan the perfect dinner and try to send the perfect greeting cards or write the perfect family letter. Everywhere we go, there is a constant reminder that there are things that must be done to achieve perfection at this time of the year.
Mom thankful Palos Verdes Peninsula brought far-flung family together
When our two daughters left for college, my husband and I assumed they would not be back with us permanently. We planned as many visits to see them as possible, but it was difficult because they lived in Tennessee, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., New York, Australia and New Zealand during school and their careers. Both of them traveled around the world for a year to research and reflect. At times, they would visit us, but they were usually short stays before they were quickly off to another destination.
How to be an excellent host on the Palos Verdes Peninsula
Since moving to the Palos Verdes Peninsula about four years ago, I have experienced a large flow of out-of-town friends and family. Perhaps it is because the airport is so close, or maybe they love the Southern California weather. They come with plans to see many of the tourist-driven sites. They visit Disneyland, Universal City, the Getty, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, downtown, the beach cities, and many more attractions. Once they arrive to spend time on the Hill, my plan of action begins.
My Turn: Acts of kindness good for your heart, soul
I seem to hear more and more stories about acts of kindness. Perhaps it’s the tough economic times that bring out more compassion. I heard about a Chicago man performing acts of kindness and blogging about them at www.366randomacts.org, a woman who leaves flowers at front doors (kindnessgirl.com), and customers at restaurants who leave extra money to pay for others’ dinners. Givesmehope.com posts short and powerful stories of many individuals who show kindness to others.
