Exploring Interspecies Communication and Empathy
In a world filled with chaos and division, the practice of interspecies communication offers a pathway to deeper understanding and connection. By asking the question, 'What is it like to be you?', individuals can cultivate empathy not only for animals but also for each other, fostering a more compassionate existence that transcends boundaries. What challenges arise from a lack of empathy? How does interspecies communication enhance understanding?
InnerSelf's Daily Inspiration: February 6, 2024
Image by Free-Photos from Pixabay Watch the video version on YouTube. Narrated by Marie T. Russell. February 6, 2024 The focus for today is: For grounding and anchoring, I spend extended time outdoors, in places with strong, supportive, nourishing energy. Today's inspiration was written by Nancy Windheart: When I feel myself losing my center, my "hawk's eye vision," my grounding and anchoring, I know I need to spend some extended time outdoors, in places with strong, supportive, nourishing energy.
5 Attitudes to Support Good Communication with Animals
Image by Barbara Bonanno Narrated by Marie T. Russell. Watch video version on InnerSelf.com or on YouTube In my many years of teaching animal communication, I have found that there are certain attitudes that support people in reclaiming their natural, inborn ability to communicate with all life. I often call these Attitudes and HeartSets (as opposed to “MindSets”), and I share them with students in my beginning classes and workshops. 1.
Grieving Our Animal Friends at the Holidays
Image by Andrew Martin Narrated by Marie T. Russell. Watch the video version here. Editor's Note: Some of the following suggestions can also be applied to loss of our human beloveds. We are ending the second year of the pandemic; the second year of this particular kind of grief, loss, and uncertainty that we are in collectively as a human species. The last two years have been exceptionally challenging in so many ways.

Joy and Resilience: A Conscious Antidote to Stress
Image by Free-Photos from Pixabay Narrated by Marie T. Russell. Video version What a time this is. Like many of you, I am affected emotionally, physically, and energetically by all that is happening in my country and in our world. Sometimes, it's just plain exhausting. Overwhelming. Worrying. Frightening. Upsetting. Angering. Heartbreaking. We know that we're in a great time of transition, of birthing a new way of being, living, and loving in our world that is long overdue. And, it's grueling.

5 Things That Can Interfere with Clear Interspecies Communication

In this post, I want to talk about some things that can interfere with our ability to hear and understand our other-than-human companions clearly. 1.

Spirit Touching Briefly into Form: Wisdom from a Damselfly
Image by PublicDomainPictures Narrated by Marie T. Russell. Video version It’s spring in the desert…and that means it’s finally warm enough for the first swims in the magical creeks that give the Verde (“Green”) Valley its name. I am blessed to have Oak Creek just a short walk away from my home…and on Sunday, I went for the ceremonial “first swim of the season.” The cottonwood trees are “snowing,” creating a magical fairyland of pollen in the creek and in the air.

During These Weird, Wild and Wonderful Times
Image by Daniel Joshua Paul How are you doing in this time? My experience is that it’s weird, and wild, and wonderful in certain ways, and really, really challenging in others. How about you? Grief, loss, uncertainty. Inspiration, creativity, a feeling of a “pause” that is ongoing. These are some of the things I’ve been feeling, and I’m hearing from many people who are experiencing similar energies and emotions.

Animal Perspectives on the Corona Virus
Image by Anja???? Three years ago, in early 2017, my whale teachers communicated to me: “Three years. Three years of human time until there is a dramatic shift in the human world and on our Earth.” When the whales shared this with me, I didn’t know what to make of it. I knew about the prophecies, I knew about the journey of evolution that the human species was making into a more heart-centered way of living and being, but I didn’t understand the timeline.

Learning to Lead In Love
Image by pasja1000 I have been thinking a lot about beauty lately… about how, alongside all of the difficulty, suffering, and tragedy in our world, there is an ever-present flow of beauty, joy, grace, and love all around us… and within us. Many times every day something shows up that takes my breath away, makes me smile or laugh out loud, or makes me bow my head for a few moments in gratitude.
A Daily Gratitude Practice That Is Very Simple
(author provided) I've been thinking a lot about gratitude lately, especially as we approach our Thanksgiving holiday here in the US. Thanksgiving is a tricky holiday for me, and for many Americans.

Welcome... Our InnerSelf welcomes your inner self. This week we "celebrate" Halloween... a time where things appear as they are not. And this concept applies to much of our lives as well: Things are not always as they seem.
How Do Animals Feel About Clothes and Costumes?
A sailor? Me? I don't even like water! Image by Uki Eiri Many people will be celebrating Halloween here in the US…and around this time of year, I often get questions about how our companion animals feel about wearing clothes and costumes, like this one I have the cutest Halloween costume for my dog, and I want to show it off at my kids’ Halloween party, but my friend says it is wrong of me to confine her in clothing. What do you think?

Life Practice: Becoming Embodied
I have a small note above my desk that is titled: “Non-Negotiable Necessities.” These are the things in my life that I truly can’t live without. They comprise the foundation of my self-care that, if neglected, sets me off balance and makes me much less effective in all that I do. Included on this list are things like spending time in nature and with my animal family, regular bodywork and healing sessions, eating healthfully and sustainably, and my Yoga practice.

Image by Brigitte Werner Welcome... Our InnerSelf welcomes your inner self. Once again I feel like starting the newsletter with the words "the times, they are a'changing"... and perhaps it is a mantra for these times, as well as an observation, and of course also a vision to create. Our featured authors this week are focusing on the big picture... the changes that are taking place as well as the changes we need to implement ourselves.
Remain Open To Miracles Without Attachment To How They Manifest
I have these words on the bulletin board above my desk: Expect Miracles. In my healing and animal communication practice, I am incredibly blessed to be able to witness miracles almost every day. A man’s debilitating sciatica, previously managed only with pain medication, disappears completely after one Reiki treatment, never to return again. A seriously ill cat perks up and begins eating again after an animal communication and healing session. A missing animal is reunited with her people.

Welcome... Our InnerSelf welcomes your inner self. Energy! It can seem like it's the elusive ingredient in our lives at times. We might find ourselves sayingwe need more energy! The good news is that we humans are powered by renewable energy. Every day we wake up and we have a new blank slate, a new 24-hours, and a new refreshed tank of energy. Though sometimes, we may feel like our tank is not being refilled and is almost dry. This week our authors help us look at energy...
Self Care and Nurturing Practices for the New Year (and Beyond)
I had a wonderful time with all of the planetary and holiday celebrations in December. I spent a lot of time outdoors, in nature, under the moon and stars, sometimes alone, sometimes with close soul-friends, setting intention for the new year and the new world that is being birthed for all of us, within and without. If you’re like me, you might be finding that you need a bit of a breather this month.

Is it Authentic Telepathic Communication or My Own Thoughts?
One of the most common questions that I receive about interspecies telepathic communication is:How can I tell the difference between my own thoughts and direct communication from an animal? One of the biggest challenges that we as humans face in reclaiming our natural ability to communicate telepathically is differentiating authentic telepathic communication (especially when it comes from non-human beings) from the thoughts, ideas, and projections of our human intellectual, thinking minds.

Welcome... Our InnerSelf welcomes your inner self. This week we look at what is sometimes considered the darker side of things... It can best be summed up perhaps with the title of one of the our featured articles: Life Is A Messy Business. We reflect on pain - both emotional and physical, grieving and death, using dreams to heal from emotional pain, and then we move on to the next step, starting fresh in rebirth.

Dog Wisdom: Live Now, Love Now
Gable with a haircut. Author provided. Losing a beloved animal friend is HARD. Really, really hard. And often, in the middle of the grief, pain, and sorrow of letting go, there are transcendent, powerful gifts that animals share with their people. It’s an honor and a privilege to be a facilitator of end-of-life conversations between animals and their families…and it’s some of the hardest and holiest work that I do.

What Can We Do to Help the Whales and the Planet?
Girl Hiking On The Planet Of The Flying Whales. Art credit: rui barros. Flickr. The whales have shown me that one of the things that they want to teach humans is how to become aware of “complete multi-dimensional awareness in physical form.” In other words, there is an integration of spiritual, energetic, cosmic awareness simultaneously with being fully present and embodied and experiencing the details of physical life on earth that the whales are able to maintain effortlessly.

Welcome... Our InnerSelf welcomes your inner self.As I focused on which articles beckoned to be included in this week's issue of InnerSelf, my conscious thought was that the focus was going to be Earth Day. While I am a firm believer that "every day should be Earth Day", this designated day gives us additional opportunity to reflect together on our love for our precious planet, our current situation and the steps we need to take to heal the earth and ourselves.
Going With The Flow Of Unpredictability
Have you found life to be unpredictable lately? So much is happening within and without. Weather. Astrological alignments. Restructuring of systems on all levels. Internal shifts. External shifts. Surprises. Disasters. It’s all here.I talk with a lot of people in the course of a week…and I can tell you that people are dealing with a lot right now. There is a huge amount of change, uncertainty, anxiety, fear, transformation, loss, grief, joy, revelation, ecstasy, and hope all happening at once.

Welcome... Our InnerSelf welcomes your inner self.Things are not always as they seem... this can be both good news and bad news... So even if you feel like you're about to get run over by a train, I guarantee you this is not the case. Since all is good news (yes even the bad stuff) even if it certainly doesn't look like it at the time, we can be grateful that things are not as they seem. Because, yes, things seem to be crazy and definitely unsettling at times...
