Handling the holiday freeze in your lawn and landscape
The recent holidays blew in with a winter storm that will not soon be forgotten. Here in Tennessee, we missed much of the snowfall that wreaked havoc across the Midwest and Northeast. To the vegetable geek, it is not actually late winter or early spring, it is quite simply “seed starting season.” So, as the heat mats and grow lights come out, and the peat moss starts flying, you might want to consider growing some beautiful small-fruited ‘Valentine’ and ‘Midnight Snack’ All American Selection (AAS) award winning tomatoes this year. ‘Valentine’ is an indeterminate grape tomato and a 2018 AAS winner that was certainly prolific in 2017 trials at the UT Gardens, Knoxville.
Heuchera ready to enjoy shady spot in your garden
One of the joys of shade gardening is the opportunity to have a taste of Tennessee woodlands in our own backyards. Two common forest flowers found in Tennessee are Heuchera and Tiarella. Better known as coral bells or alum root, Heuchera has several species that vary in distribution across the state and are more common in Middle and East Tennessee. Tiarella, or foamflower, is most common in East Tennessee.
