Here’s Your Chance to Meet Julian Edelman
Meet New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at the JCC Greater Boston‘s Leventhal-Sidman Center. Edelman will read from a special edition of his kids’ book, “Flying High,” starting at 5:30 p.m. The event is part of programming by the PJ Library, which partners with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and other local funders to provide children in the Boston area with free Jewish children’s books and music.
Why I’m Not Talking to My Son About Las Vegas
Again the bad news, again the horrific headlines and images of carnage, and again the conversation among my friends, neighborhood and school community: What do we tell our kids? This week it’s Vegas. My close group of friends with children my son’s age debated how to handle it. These kids are 6, 7 years old. That’s old enough to know that bad things can happen in the world, and old enough to begin to question their own safety.

How do we make those choices? I asked busy women what they considered important in a good friend. Anybody can like an Instagram post or send a text from time to time.
The First Day of School: A Poem for Parents
The end of summer has arrived at last, Beach days and pool time, all in the past. A brand-new school year! Don’t worry. I’m on it. Well, to be honest, I’m ready to vomit. I filled out a worksheet, detailed and long, About the hopes and dreams for my spawn. Did he enjoy reading? Did he like math? Oh, yes, at this age, he’s reading Sylvia Plath. He’s happy! He’s friendly! I gamely jotted. But who am I to judge? I am besotted. How might I want to volunteer in the class?
Loving a Parent With a Disability
We might get older, but when we’re around our parents, we never quite stop being kids. And when they get sick (which they probably will), it stings. Cambridge-based photographer Diana Levine was in college at New York University when her mother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a chronic and progressive neurological disorder, 12 years ago. “It makes you grow up faster [having] a parent who has a degenerative disease.
