From Megabits to Milliseconds
This paper argues that with fiber and gigabit cable now reaching most US locations, bandwidth is no longer the binding constraint on internet performance—latency is. The authors contend that latency is determined largely outside the last mile, by middle-mile fiber, peering density, and proximity to Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), so the massive public investment in last-mile deployment does little to address it.
The broadband competitive landscape on the eve of BEAD
In recent decades, broadband internet service has taken its place alongside other network utilities that define modern life, such as electricity, telephony, and, to a lesser extent, piped water and sewer systems. The pandemic, when internet service could be a matter of life and death through the way it facilitated social distancing, clinched broadband’s status as a basic need. The broadband business differs from other utilities in its technological diversity. All electricity comes through wires.

States Approach Readiness for the Broadband Rollout, But Federal Nod is Elusive
Three years and five months after the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed, the BEAD Program still hasn’t connected a single person to broadband, but it is on the brink of being able to do so on a large scale, if Washington gives a green light. Most states have now opened a project application window, and 24 states have closed one.
The BEAD program begins to bear fruit
On January 13, 2025, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announced its approval of Louisiana’s Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Final Proposal. Delaware’s approval followed the next day. With those two landmarks, coming as the fourth year since the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) begins to elapse, the BEAD program is at last beginning to bear fruit.
How Louisiana Solved the BEAD Rubik’s Cube
On November 18, 2024, Louisiana’s Office of Broadband Development and Connectivity (also known as ConnectLA) posted its Broadband Equity Access and Deployment Program Final Proposal for public comment, which was an historic achievement.

States are in the driver's seat as the BEAD program finally gains momentum
The largest-ever federal broadband expansion program—Broadband Equity, Access and Development or BEAD—was passed in November 2021 but is only now really starting to hit its stride. No one has been connected to broadband by BEAD, nor have any BEAD funds been awarded to any internet service provider (ISP) for expansion purposes. But they will come soon.
BEAD’s progress and variety: Some states are charging ahead but some will need more time, and BEAD mapping is complicated
As the three-year anniversary of the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act approaches on November 15, the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program hasn’t connected anyone yet, but a lot is in motion. Application windows are open. Louisiana is ahead of the game and should complete its subgrantee selection soon. Some states, though, will need extended time. States vary a lot in how they define project areas and how they plan to deal with overlaps.
Program review: Where does BEAD stand three years in?
On November 15, 2021, U.S. Congress passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), which created the Broadband Equity, Access, and Development (BEAD) program. BEAD’s $42.45 billion budget makes it the largest federal broadband deployment program to date.

Optimizing cloud resources and cost with APM metadata in Elastic Observability
Application performance monitoring (APM) is much more than capturing and tracking errors and stack traces. Today’s cloud-based businesses deploy applications across various regions and even cloud providers. So, harnessing the power of metadata provided by the Elastic APM agents becomes more critical. Leveraging the metadata, including crucial information like cloud region, provider, and machine type, allows us to track costs across the application stack.
