What was your first job as a journalist?
To interview indigenous women of the Mixteca sierra in Oaxaca about their labor in the community.

It's affecting the speed of news. Crucial events are being reported in real time, in detriment of depth, analysis and reflection.

I don't like to be given exclusives but in-depth stories about subjects that I know.

Why did you become a journalist?
I came of age reading the culture section of newspapers.

My profile on Amy Winehouse on the 1st anniversary of her death.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Read a lot and contrast versions of the same event.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Midnight.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
To interview an artist on the 25 anniversary of her first record. I was a fan as a teenager – both excited and terrified.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
To cover a concert of a band I absolutely detested.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?
A great divide between cultural journalism and entertainment journalism. For me, entertainment is part of culture.
