Commentary: Hospital District taxes do benefit Adair Co.
Commentary: Hospital District taxes do benefit Adair Co. Re: Letter: Hospital tax By Neal M. Gold CEO/Chairman of the Board, Adair County Hospital District Ann, you've asked a great question. The financial answer is really quite long and complicated, but it all boils down to a case of bad management. Unfortunately, despite investigations by both the state and federal governments, with a few minor individual exceptions, no general illegal activity was determined to have occurred.

Caring for our exhausted rabbis
The ongoing COVID-19 crisis certainly impacts every one of us, and our Jewish community is being transformed in ways we have barely begun to understand. But I’d like to make one observation about this extraordinary moment: Our rabbis are exhausted. As president of the Massachusetts Board of Rabbis, I talk to many rabbis in all different sorts of professional positions and from all the movements of Judaism. And I’m concerned by what I hear.
Tu BiShvat: How Israel Has Planted New Seeds in the Jewish Soul
By Rabbi Neal Gold , 2/04/2020 When the Zionist movement was newly blossoming in the early 20th century, a prominent group of cultural-spiritual Zionists insisted that that it was not only Jews who would be saved by a return to the Land of Israel; Judaism itself had to be renewed as well. A return to the Land would inevitably impact the ways in which Judaism was expressed – not just in the Palestine, but in Jewish communities everywhere.
Birkat Hagomel: A Blessing For Coming through Trauma — and Prevailing | My Jewish Learning
The Jewish blessing known as Birkat Hagomel is recited by people who have survived a traumatic, potentially life-threatening episode. One who wishes to recite (“bench,” in Yiddish) Birkat Hagomel is first called up for an aliyah to the Torah.
By the Rivers of Babylon We Remember Zion
Psalm 137 is a lament of longing for a community torn from home. In 586 BCE, the Babylonian empire conquered Jerusalem, destroyed the first Temple that had been built by King Solomon, and uprooted large numbers of people, deporting them hundreds of miles to the east.
Remembering Rabbi Larry Raphael, z"l, and His Torah of Kindness
By Rabbi Neal Gold , 3/18/2019 I’m writing too many eulogies for teachers of mine these days. But when I heard that Larry Raphael had died on Sunday, I wanted to put some thoughts into writing, for he was truly special. Larry was a dean at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) when I arrived at the New York campus in the early 90s. He published a few anthologies of Jewish mystery writing (his great passion), and it was fun to talk books with him.
The Exile of Tishah B’Av: What Is It We're Mourning?
Exile is one of the preeminent themes of the Torah. From the outset of Genesis, Adam and Eve are exiled from the Garden of Eden. Abraham is called by God to “the land I will show you” but famine forces him to seek refuge in Egypt. Joseph is sold off to Egypt, where, at the end of his life, he makes his family promise, “When God has taken notice of you, carry up my bones from here” (Gen. 50:25).
Roth: An appreciation of the wicked child
Roth: An appreciation of the wicked child JUNE 7, 2018 – I am one of the Exiles of Newark, New Jersey. My father was raised on Goldsmith Avenue, became a bar mitzvah at Young Israel, and went to Weequahic High School, class of ’59. His mother was born in Newark; both she and my grandfather spent their careers teaching in the Newark public school system. My great-grandparents’ graves are in Newark, in the McClellan Street cemeteries. No doubt I would have been there, too.
