Unlocking Istio's Full Potential with Solo.io’s Insights
| As you journey deeper into the realm of Istio service mesh, you’ve likely encountered the vast array of features, deployment patterns, tuning controls, configuration options, and much more that makes it an immensely powerful tool. Yet, this flexibility and control can sometimes appear daunting, diverting your focus from what truly matters for your application. At Solo.io, we stand as pioneers in the Istio community, having spent years guiding customers in harnessing the true potential of Istio.
SoloCon keynotes, sessions, customers, and workshops
Neeraj Poddar | February 20, 2022 SoloCon 2022 is just around the corner on March 8-10 and we are excited to share more information about keynotes, sessions, customers, and workshops. SoloCon will bring together industry experts, technical leaders, and customers to share their best practices for adopting, applying, and using API gateway, service mesh, and cloud native technologies. This year’s event also features customized agendas for the Americas, EMEA, and APAC.
Aspen Mesh Leads the Way for a Secure Open Source Istio
Here at Aspen Mesh, we entrenched ourselves in the Istio project not long after its start. Recognizing Istio’s potential early on, we committed to building our entire company with Istio at its core. From the early days of the project, Aspen Mesh took an active role in Istio — we’ve been part of the community since Fall of 2017.
Sailing Faster with Istio
While the extraordinarily large shipping container, Ever Given, ran aground in the Suez Canal, halting a major trade route that has caused losses in the billions, our solution engineers at Aspen Mesh have been stuck diagnosing a tricky Istio and Envoy performance bottleneck on their own island for the past few weeks.
Sailing Faster with Istio, Part 2
While our intrepid team tackled the problem of scaling for high-throughput workloads by adding sidecar proxies, we encountered a bottleneck not entirely unlike what the Ever Given experienced not long ago in the Suez Canal. (In part 1 of this series, you can read all about how we found this low CPU utilization along with unbalanced proxy worker thread connections while running a Fortio client.

Neeraj Poddar Neeraj is a technical leader with a proven record of delivering outcomes in fast-paced and early stage organizations. His passion for startups and solving complex distributed system problems led him to co-found Aspen Mesh where he leads the engineering efforts as chief architect. He’s an open source enthusiast and member of the Istio Technical Oversight Committee (TOC) and Steering Committee.
Steering The Future Of Istio
I’m honored to have been chosen by the Istio community to serve on the Istio Steering Committee along with Christian Posta, Zack Butcher and Zhonghu Xu. I have been fortunate to contribute to the Istio project for nearly three years and am excited by the huge strides the project has made in solving key challenges that organizations face as they shift to cloud-native architecture. Maybe what’s most exciting is the future direction of the project.
Helping Istio Sail
Around three years ago, we recognized the power of service mesh as a technology pattern to help organizations manage the next generation of software delivery challenges, and that led to us founding Aspen Mesh. And we know that efficiently managing high-scale Kubernetes applications requires the power of Istio.
Lin Sun and Neeraj Poddar on Istio, Wasm, and the Future of Service Mesh
Hello. Welcome to "The InfoQ Podcast." I'm Daniel Bryant, the News Manager at InfoQ, and Product Architect at Datawire. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Lin Sun, Senior Technical Staff Member, and Master Inventor at IBM, and Neeraj Poddar, Engineering Lead and Architect at Aspen Mesh. Recently, the InfoQ team and I published an ultimate guide on the topic of service meshes, which you can find at infoq.com.
Announcing Aspen Mesh 1.3
We’re excited to announce the release of Aspen Mesh 1.3 which is based on Istio’s latest LTS release 1.3 (specific tag version 1.3.3). This release builds on our self-managed release (1.2 series), includes all the new capabilities added by the Istio community in release 1.3 plus a host of new Aspen Mesh features, all fully tested with production grade support ready for enterprise adoption. The theme for Aspen Mesh and Istio 1.3 release was enhanced User Experience.
Containers: Orchestration and Beyond
Although some believe Java is dying, developments such as the upcoming release of Java 9 and the strength of the Java community tell another story. New JVM-based languages like Kotlin and exciting changes in Java 9 such as Project Jigsaw, Streams API improvements, and JShell prove a bright future ahead. The 2017 Guide to Java explores upcoming features of Java 9, how to make your apps backwards-compatible, a look into whether Microservices are right for you, and using the Futures API in Java.
Why You Should Care About Istio Gateways
If you’re breaking apart the monolith, one of the huge advantages to using Istio to manage your microservices is that it enables a configuration that leverages an ingress model that is similar to traditional load balancers and application delivery controllers. In the load balancers world, Virtual IPs and Virtual Servers have long been used as concepts that enable operators to configure ingress traffic in a flexible and scalable manner ( Lori Macvittie has some relevant thoughts on this ).
Distributed Tracing, Istio and Your Applications
In the microservices world, distributed tracing is slowly becoming the most important tool for debugging and understanding your application dependencies. During my recent conversations in meetups and conferences, I found there was a lot of interest in how distributed tracing works but at the same time there was a fair amount of confusion on how tracing interacts with service meshes like Istio and Aspen Mesh.
