Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I covered a recent college graduate who worked for Teach for America in stills, writing and video in 2001.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Hahahaaaa, yes - I am old enough to have learned to type on a typewriter!

How is social media changing news?

Overwhelming the masses I think, watering it down to cute cat videos?

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lois Lane of course, since Peter Parker is kinda a hack.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Oh give me an hour to wax eloquent, or a couple months to shoot and edit a video answer!

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Phone - let's be real, e-mail sucks - but hearing is believing?

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Adobe Creative Suite and Canon Cameras

What's your favorite social network?

facebook

Who do you wish followed you?

Deepak Chopra, Gregory Colbert, Stephen Colbert, and my teenage daughters.

Why did you become a journalist?

Story is the framework through which we make sense of the world. My curious artist itch is nicely scratched by interpreting and expressing.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No highschool, but college - design and photography

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Oye! I think my work for a water charity in Africa came at a time that took their communications strategy to the professional level.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Learn a trade - because the most important story probably won't pay you.

When's the best time to pitch you?

After the coffee kicks in.
