Fish Food 665: Systems and Empathy
Way back in 2017 (crikey) I wrote a report for the IPA on the Future of Agencies. One of the key frameworks that I used described how agencies could succeed in the future by focusing on combining systems (which I defined as data, technology, efficiency, delivery at scale) and empathy (human insight, creativity, relational connection). Given where we’re at with AI right now this feels like it was more prescient than I could have known at the time.

Agile transformation - Digital has changed our lives
Digital has changed our lives. The sudden and constant change in digital technologies has radically changed the way people interface with reality and daily life. These continuous evolutions bring with them an infinite amount of new features and updates which, however, often require effort to be integrated. However, it is still very common today for many companies to encounter difficulties in adapting to these changes.

A Structure for Continuous Innovation: Pioneers, Settlers, Town Planners
How do you structure a large business for relentless, continuous innovation? In the book we reference the work of Simon Wardley (who kindly let us use his graphic as well), and specifically his pioneers, settlers, town planners model (which in turn was drawn from Robert X. Cringely’s book Accidental Empires which describes companies in terms of Commandos, Infantry and Police).
Budget 2016: Employers hit with £500m bill for NICs on pay-offs
Employers will pay National Insurance Contributions (NICs) on pay-offs over £30,000 from April 2018. It is expected to cost employers almost £500m a year by 2020-21, and a total of £1.4bn over the next five years. The move was announced by chancellor George Osborne as part of his Budget speech and will apply to termination payments and other similar payments where income tax is already payable.
Budget 2016: Employers given responsibility to ensure off-payroll workers’ tax compliance
Public sector employers face the prospect of invading workers’ tax affairs to fulfil compliance with rules around the use of personal service companies.
Organisational Flow, Speed and Momentum
The case for organisations to become far more agile in how they operate in response to the impact of digital technologies has been well made. But it’s worth exploring what agility really means in this context. One of my favourite ways of describing this from a cultural perspective comes from Pinterest: It’s easy to think of agility purely in terms of speed (productivity, speed of response, speed to market) but I think there’s more to it than that.
On the Renaissance of Email Newsletters
The email newsletter seems to be undergoing something of a continuing renaissance. Quite a number of the smartest people I know now do their own update, and the list of insightful newsletters that now arrive my inbox keeps on growing.
The Power of Print
Uploaded on Feb 18, 2014 Raconteur's take on the power of print in the world of marketing today. It's underestimated - it's underused - and therefore, it's a very clever, worthwhile part of the strategy if it's done well. Raconteur's take on the power of print in the world of marketing today. At the Edges
Edges have always been interesting places. And I think they are becoming increasingly so. In The Power Of Pull, Hagel, Brown and Davison talk about innovation happening at the edges of organisations. About the value of individuals who are connected to the interesting ideas being shared and who bring new thinking into a company. At the #Firestarters 2 event at Google, Tom Hulme of IDEO talked about how great insight can come from looking to the extremes of how people use a product or a service.
Have Focus Groups Had Their Day?
"They just ensure that you don’t offend anyone, and produce bland inoffensive products." Jonathan Ive It seems I'm not the only one.
