In his career he has helped cover the war in Afghanistan for The National Post and The Washington Post (traveling with Canadian and U.S. forces), and the war in Iraq for the Detroit Free Press (embedding with the United States Marine Corps). Richard has also worked for the United Nations, heading up a Visual Media Unit as an artist, advocacy photographer and documentary filmmaker in Kenya, Zimbabwe, The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic.
Richard has been nominated for two National Newspaper Awards in Canada, and has a two decade high mound of annual awards from the Society for News Design. Many of his fieldwork sketches from Iraq and Afghanistan are now held by the Smithsonian Museum of Armed Forces History, and the United States Marine Corps Museum.
