DGS cancels winter dance after lack of student participation
Each year in February, DGS hosts a winter dance for students, but in more recent years there has been a decline in student participation. After announcing the winter dance date and other activities coming along with it, DGS staff and Student Council have decided to cancel this year’s winter dance. Student Activities Director Jennifer Martinez believes that this decision for cancellation is best for students and DGS as a whole.
Top five holiday gifts for picky parents
Holiday shopping is debatably the most difficult part of the season, especially when parents say, “don’t spend your money on me” or “I don’t need anything” when they’re asked what they want for Christmas, like my parents. Well, here are my top five gifts for difficult and picky parents that “just want a day of silence.” 1: Yeti insulated mug A low risk, high reward present. My parents are severe coffee addicts, so this present is perfect for their on-the-go cup o’ joe.
Annual festivities: students unique experiences of sharing their birthdays with a holiday
A typical birthday is celebrated with a cake, presents and time spent with family and friends. Although, for very few DGS students, there’s an added element to their special day–a holiday. Whether it’s Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Leap Day, few students share their yearly celebrations with an extra layer of excitement. Senior Gabby Ruchniewicz shares her birthday every few years with Thanksgiving-as the date for the holiday varies each year.
Lights, camera, action: Reality TV has students in a chokehold
The cult following of reality television shows is at an all-time high, due to viewers being able to follow their favorite stars on any social media platform. Various shows have gone viral within the past few years, influencing people to start tuning in to the drama. Senior Ariella Urias has followed various reality shows and the personalities that come with the shows. “I like hearing how everyone has a story and all of their personalities,” Urias said.

Mustangs stampede to the polls
On Sept. 15, an email was sent out to DGS students asking about their opinions on politics and the 2024 election. It was an optional survey sent out by the Director of Student Activities Jennifer Martinez and approximately 168 students took the questionnaire. According to this survey, 90.4 percent of students are currently not registered to vote. Nonetheless, it is important to acknowledge that the majority of the student body isn’t eligible to vote as students are required to be 18 years of age.
DGS implements new retake policy
DGS has administered a new retake policy this school year. The policy states that a student may retake a test only if they have scored below an 80%, and the highest grade that they could receive on a retake is also an 80%. Last school year, the retake policy allowed students to retake tests regardless of their results. Students could also receive any grade in return with no limits set in place.
DGS clubs bring bling to classroom doors
With homecoming traditions beginning, DGS clubs and activities are able to decorate an assigned door and compete against other clubs as a way of showing school spirit for homecoming week. This year’s homecoming theme is Cosmic Glow Gala. Clubs and activities use the theme as a guide into how they decide to decorate their doors. After each club decorates their doors, there is a form sent out for the student body to vote for their favorite design.
Trostangs continue to put in work after winning state title
Even after earning the state championship title last season, the co-op varsity girls gymnastics team continues to put in work. The Trostangs proceed to value team dynamic and work ethic as tryouts are fast approaching. DGS junior Genevieve Herion helped lead her team to their victory at the IHSA state championship last season and placed third overall in the finals. Herion is still showing her commitment to the team and gymnastics as a whole.
Pep assembly has new location, same DGS traditions
With a new location this year, the DGS pep rally’s practices and performances help start up homecoming weekend. The pep rally will take place in the large gym on Oct. 20, unlike last year when it took place on the football field. Student Activities Director Jennifer Martinez organizes all things homecoming and makes all decisions based on the event. DGS and DGN have both decided that they will hold their pep rallies indoors this year.
