Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

News journalist on Channel TV, the ITV station on Jersey. Aged 20, no experience, working in black and white film...yikes, what an intro

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Are you trying to guess my age? But the answer is of course, including AZERTYs in German and QWERTZs in France. Way to mess up your copy.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Mediating the world for your audience, representing them at the front line of whatever issue you are covering and coming back with the truth.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Independence of thought, a desire for truth and an enquiring mind...and courage. Never sell yourself or your subject short.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Where the PR understood what I do, never over-assumed, responded to queries swiftly and managed the process to completion with sensitivity

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

(I think you mean worst...) Any pitch from a PR who doesn't understand my product is a total waste of my time and theirs.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Spectator - good writing, good editing, always entertaining.
