Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Work experience on the Clevedon Mercury and Weston & Worle News newspapers in Somerset.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

My grandparents had one that I was allowed to use a couple of times when I was little.

How is social media changing news?

It is putting pressure on trad media to be quicker, but it also shows the danger of rumours circulating quickly.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

William de Worde, founder of Ankh-Morpork's first newspaper in The Truth, by Terry Pratchett.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being sociable, tolerant, accurate, diligent, speedy, slogging away for ages to get that one story just a few minutes ahead of everyone else.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#nowthatcherisdead, sparking rumours of the death of an ageing pop singer.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email or face-to-face. I do not need anyone phoning me up to read a press release at me.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

The phone. Email, internet research, and the FT's content management system all come in handy too.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter. It's virtually impossible to explain why it works so well for those that use it, but it is a great way to build new contacts.

Who do you wish followed you?

Anyone who thinks being a journalist is easy and/or exciting. If they actually physically follow me around it'd soon put them straight.

Why did you become a journalist?

Initially because I liked writing, but once I actually started to do a bit of work for a local paper I loved the buzz of getting a story.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Never had one, more's the pity.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Most recently, Investment Adviser's coverage of the FCA's platform paper and its impact on advisers. No one else has quite nailed it.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Ask questions, be interested, do your research, and above all try to be nice to people, particularly in the trade magazine world!

When's the best time to pitch you?

Monday, Tuesday, maybe Wednesday.
