The Psychology Behind Why People Will Return to the Office
Walk into any central business coffee bar on a Wednesday at 8:40 AM and you'll see the new commute in action: sneakers, AirPods, and a queue that rivals pre-flight security. Kastle Systems' Back-to-Work Barometer puts national office occupancy above 53 percent - up five points from late 2024 - yet most people still arrive only two or three days a week. That pattern says less about policy compliance than about purpose.
Miniaturized optically generated Bessel beam ultrasound for volumetric transcranial brain stimulation
Abstract Noninvasive stimulation of small, variably shaped brain subregions is crucial for advancing our understanding of brain functions. Current ultrasound neuromodulation faces two major trade-offs when targeting brain subregions: miniaturization versus volumetric control and spatial resolution versus transcranial capability. Here, we present an optically generated Bessel beam ultrasound (OBUS) device designed to overcome these limitations.
How Companies are Designing Spaces for Purpose, Not the Traditional 9-5
The 9-to-5 mandate is buckling under the weight of fresh data. A University of Pittsburgh analysis of more than 4,400 US forms found that return-to-office orders neither lift revenue nor improve share-price performance, yet they do erode employee satisfaction. Mandates are almost always under the guise of increasing " innovation and collaboration." But the research connecting mandated office days with innovation is shaky at best.
Are Office Buildings for the Job or the Person?
The answer to this question isn’t simple because it’s the wrong question. The better question is: what makes coming into the office worthwhile? Office buildings aren’t really about the job or the person. They’re about the purpose of being together. If someone’s sitting in traffic, paying for parking, and stepping away from their home desk, it needs to be worth it. People perform best when they come in with a purpose, not because they are mandated to. The real question isn’t whether people show up.
Designed for What Purpose? Rethinking the Role of the Office
Too many office strategies are still stuck on the wrong questions, such as “Is this space built for the job or the person?” But questions like these miss the bigger picture. Office design today is not about roles or individual preferences; it’s about intent. Why are people walking through the door at all? With 64 percent of companies embracing hybrid work, we are well past the day of assuming people will come in just because it is Monday.
Assessment of cauda equina syndrome: new national guidelines and implications for primary care
Introduction In primary care, cauda equina syndrome (CES) is rare but GPs are often the front line for the recognition of possible CES. Since 2020, national guidance for GPs has stated that symptoms of CES are sufficient to mandate emergency referral for imaging even in the absence of objective signs of CES (such as altered perianal sensation [PAS] or anal tone [AT]). Indeed, rectal (PR) examination to determine altered PAS and AT is not recommended in primary care.

Weird corners when converting to outlines
Hi all, has anyone had issues with Sketch creating weird inside corners when converting to outlines? Instead of a single point for inside corner, it often creates two points causing the lines of the path to intersect.Sometimes it doesn't matter, but has caused problems for me when trying to combine with other shapes, exporting, etc. Of course I can manually go in and edit the points, but if anyone has found a quicker solution I would be grateful. Thanks.Nick
Progress bar completing too quickly
I have a progress bar that takes place after a user uploads a file while the backend is running some processes. It looks like a standard progress bar that fills as the processing completes, like so: When the upload/processing is complete the bar is replaced with a text that says "Upload Complete". If the file is larger it takes upwards of a few seconds to complete and provides a nice visual progression to let the user know nothing is frozen.
