Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

That would be Wrapped in Plastic. My buds created an amazing Twin Peaks/David Lynch magazine that I was able to contribute to!

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Played around with some back in the day, but not really.

How is social media changing news?

Hard to say with the algorithm perverting what we see.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

The first one that comes to mind is William Miller in Almost Famous.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means that I get to write about things that (mostly) bring joy to people.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#neverforget used in a cheeky way

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Just reach out and we'll talk.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Pages. Google Docs. WWW. YouTube. Internet Archive.

What's your favorite social network?

None. Addicted to IG. Love Bluesky in theory.

Who do you wish followed you?

Right now, I'd say Lord and Miller.

Why did you become a journalist?

I love movies, TV shows, music, comic books, you name it. I wanted to share that joy with others that feel the same way.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did. I wrote entertainment pieces for Trinity High School in Euless, Texas.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I really loved covering all of Steven Soderbergh's movies for Metacritic and interviewing Crispin Glover for Under the Radar.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Write what you're passionate about and the rest will follow.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Morning or afternoon. Let's go!

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Would you like to write about Steven Soderbergh's filmography? Yes, please!

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Perhaps covering a musical artist/genre that I wasn't super fond of.

What's your favorite drink?

Horchata!

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

With my family or at the movies.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Letterboxd, Entertainment Weekly RIP, AV Club, The New Yorker

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That this is the only way I make income.
