Why Summer Swimming Will Always Have My Heart
Why Summer Swimming Will Always Have My Heart By Nicole Farina, Swimming World College Intern (From the Archive) Sometimes on the first day of class, a teacher will ask you to describe yourself, or explain who you are to the group. My answer to this question hasn’t once changed. Katie Ledecky Named AP Female Athlete of the Year “I’m a swimmer.” I take a whole lot of pride in being a swimmer. It’s who I am, and it always will be. I’ll probably keep calling myself a swimmer until I’m 30.
Single in the Holy City: Exploring Charleston's "Peter Pan" Culture
Dating in Charleston has quite the notable reputation of being a real pain in the ass, and a lot of us have seen it firsthand, whether you live here or not. From what you see on TV or social media, to personal experiences, to tales of Peter Pans frolicking around the city, we know all about it. But in the age of "situationships" and hookup culture galore, what makes this city stand out so much?

Single in the Holy City: Not So Single in the Holy City
I’ve made being single my personality for as long as I can remember. For a while, it was an insecurity. Something I didn’t really talk about. And if I did, I learned to make fun of myself about it first, before anyone else did. Then, in what feels like a blink of an eye but was actually years of work on myself, being single became a superpower to me. It opened doors, built opportunities for me, and gave me the gift of independent self-empowerment.

Single in the Holy City: Dating in Charleston, as Told by Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has taken over the world, and she’s not going anywhere. Whether you’re a Swiftie or not, you can’t deny her talent of storytelling and relatability that she’s able to bring to life within her music. I’ve always found myself feeling like Taylor stole pieces of my diary to write certain songs, because they’ve always felt a little too personal. How does she know exactly how I feel?
Single in the Holy City: There's No Escaping Past Suitors in Charleston
One of my favorite parts about living in Charleston has always been that you could bump into anyone you know, anywhere. You could walk right out of your front door and see one of your characters. It reminded me of college. That safe feeling of even when you’re by yourself, you’ll probably see a familiar face. Plus, the entertainment of texting your friends “Guess who I just saw?” never gets old....until you live in Charleston for more than a year and truly dabble in the dating world here.

Single in the Holy City: Can You Find Your Monday Morning Person in Charleston?
Dating advice has become oversaturated on the internet. And I can say that confidently, as someone who not only shares her own dating life and tips across multiple platforms, but also constantly consumes dating content. I just can’t help myself. Often, it’s the same thoughts just with the words rearranged - "Three dates before you do this, three months before you do that." Rarely do I ever find a new dating mantra that strikes a chord with me.

Single in the Holy City: How to Plan a Memorable First Date in Charleston
Planning a good first date is a form of art. Where you go and what you do can make or break everything. Especially in a city like Charleston, where there are so many different vibes to choose from. In my years of not only being in the dating scene myself, but consuming constant dating content in TV, movies, and TikTok, I like to think I’ve perfected the first date formula. The activity: you’re going to get drinks, not dinner. I’m a firm believer that drinks are the superior move.

Single in the Holy City - POV: A First Date
POV: you go on a first date for the first time. Not ever. Just in a while, but it feels like it's been long enough that you almost forget what to do. Is that even possible? It has to be just like riding a bike, right? You try to reassure yourself, but then you remember that you actually forgot how to ride a bike between the ages of 12 and 14, and your best friend had to re-teach you. Oh boy. You spend the day swatting away the nerves, until 6pm rolls around. Time to get ready.
Introducing: Single in the Holy City
Some people are scared of the word “single.” Too quickly, it becomes synonymous with lonely. Alone. Sad. That’s not how I see it in my world. When you’re 27-about-to-turn-28, have the best group of girlfriends you could ask for, live in your favorite city, and are following your dreams…single becomes just another adjective. Not the only one. I’m Nicole Farina, founder of The Charleston Diaries and resident single girl.

A Nine Year Fight
For William M. Sutton ’23, the decision to join Our Harvard Can Do Better, a student organization which since 2012 has fought to dismantle rape culture at Harvard, was an easy one. He sees sexual violence as an issue so “pervasive and immediate” that standing by is simply not an option. “You can see it, or experience it, or know people who have experienced it,” he says. “You can point at it and say it happens here.
Can Psychedelics Actually Save America? | Magazine | The Harvard Crimson
As the United States approaches the fiftieth anniversary of President Richard Nixon’s declaration of a “war on drugs,” the country faces a reckoning over its long history of racism and institutional violence. That reckoning has manifested most publicly in protests this summer.
A New Fear for Salem | Magazine | The Harvard Crimson
These days, a crowd isn’t just a crowd: It’s a coronavirus outbreak waiting to happen. This is the fear of Salem residents in 2020, especially those who work in the town’s tourism sector. There is typically an organized chaos that undergirds visiting Salem, Mass. in October, when the town hosts its series of Halloween-themed programming. Parking is expensive, but still available.
Dear Freshmen: Harvard Outdoor Must-Do’s | Flyby | The Harvard Crimson
Autumn has arrived in Cambridge, and we’ve got good news and bad news for all you freshmen currently living on campus. The good news: leaves changing color in the Yard! Apple cider donuts! All the pumpkin spiced lattes you could ever hope to drink! The bad news: autumn on campus is more like a soft intro to winter, and it’s about to get cold. Before everyone goes into dorm room hibernation, there’s no better time to (safely) take advantage of some great outdoor spots around campus.
Survival of the Small Business | Magazine | The Harvard Crimson
Every weekend since Aug. 9 of this year, local vendors have flocked to Greenpoint, Brooklyn to set up shop under canvas tents (all stationed six feet apart from each other, of course). The Greenpoint Terminal Market is organized by Lauren Nishi, who wanted to facilitate local commerce on summer weekends in hopes of easing the financial hardships that small businesses continue to face amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
A First for First-Years | Magazine | The Harvard Crimson
Harvard freshmen — the only full cohort living on campus — have no choice but to try and get close to each other from six feet away. These days, mornings at Harvard start the same way they have for decades: Some students set off on a daily riverside jog, others head to the dining hall to grab breakfast, and still others sleep in until just a few minutes before lecture begins.

The Confessions of a Butterflyer
A butterflyer often has a love-hate relationship with the stroke. But when it comes down to it, what can be accomplished outweighs the negatives.
72 Students in the Studio | Magazine | The Harvard Crimson
“Painting’s Doubt” is unlike any other introductory painting course taught at Harvard. While most studio classes are capped at anywhere from 12 to 20 students, Painting’s Doubt has room for 72. Professor Matt R. Saunders ’97 might be teaching the most expensive Gen Ed ever offered. “I’ve spent $15,000 on supplies, already, within the last three weeks,” Saunders says, sitting in his office — a tiny room tucked away in the far back corner of the Carpenter Center’s drawing studio.

Knead Doughnuts — a gourmet doughnut shop based in Providence, R.I., popular for their locally-sourced ingredients and specialty doughnuts — was supposed to host a pop-up shop in the store from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It didn’t seem to pull in any customers.
