Jews, like other peoples, have been much affected by the history of colonialism and empire. The Babylonian exile and the Roman dispersal were formative in constructing Jewish identity. Life within the Islamic empires stamped the experience of Mizrahi Jews in much the same way as, later, life in the Tsarist and Austro-Hungarian Empires molded the experience of the Jews of Europe.
