Dan’s Daily: Penguins Old Problems; Flyers Trade Rumors; Scary Injury in StL
NEW YORK — We’ll stay on Long Island another day as the Pittsburgh Penguins practice later today at UBS Arena. It was another disappointing night for the Penguins, who apparently are much better in tight games than games in which they’ve earned a multi-goal lead, and they blew a 3-1 lead in a shootout loss to the New York Islanders. Only two outlets made the trip to the game, and we’re one of them. We’ve got full coverage and analysis.
Metro Table Set for Penguins; Feast of Fizzle? Original
They have been here before, of course. And not too long ago. It didn’t go well, to say the least. Now the Pittsburgh Penguins get something of a do-over with a road trip that could land them in another funk or launch them onto a path toward being consistently competitive. The Penguins looked on their four-game trip through western Canada last month as a way to justify the optimism that permeated the locker room in the preseason.
Pirates AFL Updates: Everyone Contributes; Bidois Racks up Strikeouts
The Scottsdale Scorpions erupted for 10 runs in a win over the Mesa Solar Sox on Wednesday night, and all four Pittsburgh Pirates’ prospects in the lineup reached base and scored at least one time. The quartet combined for eight walks — Termarr Johnson and Geovanny Planchart each had three and Sammy Siani and Kervin Pichardo each reached once on a free pass. Of all four prospects in the lineup on Wednesday, Siani had the biggest night.
Penguins Winless Spiral Continues; Fleury Dunks on Pens 5-3 Original
PITTSBURGH — Holding two goals leads the Pittsburgh Penguins have become mortal enemies for whom there is no common ground. For the third time in five games, the Penguins claimed a 2-0 lead only to throw it away faster than a stack of junk mail, losing to the Minnesota Wild 5-3 at PPG Paints Arena. The Penguins are winless in their last six games (0-5-1).
Core Four Pose Pregame: Fleury, Crosby, Malkin, Letang Once More Original
The Pittsburgh Penguins championship core began not with the fortuitous 2005 draft lottery win which netted them Sidney Crosby. Nor did it begin with losing the 2004 lottery and getting second overall pick Evgeni Malkin. No, the Penguins championship core began with a slick draft day trade up to the No. 1 pick in 2003 to select goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. In hockey years, 2003 was a lifetime ago, but the Penguins lept past touted prospects Eric Staal and Nathan Horton to select Fleury.
Bryan Rust Injury Update Original
The Pittsburgh Penguins will be without winger Bryan Rust for a while. Tuesday, coach Mike Sullivan confirmed that Rust was out “week to week” with a lower-body injury. Rust, 32, who missed the first couple of games this season due to injury awkwardly tangled with Vancouver Canucks winger Nils Hoglander in the second period of the Penguins 4-3 loss on Saturday at Rogers Place. Rust was visibly injured and upset with the contact, refusing to leave the ice until he said a few words to Hoglander.
Penguins Game 11, Fleury Night; Lines, Notes & How to Watch vs. Wild
The Pittsburgh Penguins (3-6-1) completed their first 10-game segment with a resounding thud. The team is winless in five games, including earning a mere point on their four-game Western Canada road trip that ended with a 4-3 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. The Penguins face the Minnesota Wild (5-1-2) on Tuesday, as well as old friend Marc-Andre Fleury one more time.
