What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a cub reporter on the Wisbech Standard in England, circulation 16,000 a week.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I have! Typewriters were standard in the newsroom when I started out.
How is social media changing news?
I think that's pretty obvious. It's no longer fact checked.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Fictional journalism is an oxymoron.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It depends on which area you focus but for me it's all about story telling.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email is fine.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Everything online but it starts with Word.
What's your favorite social network?
I am currently enjoying Broadcast however Twitter remains a big staple for me.

The Esquire writer Chris Jones.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because I love writing.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No I was too busy trying to be a rock star in my band.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A short story I wrote about Robert Koke, the first surfer in Bali.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Connect with the reader on an emotional level.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
Any one that I commissioned!
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Whichever one I didn't take up.
What's your favorite drink?
Beer!
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On the golf course.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Guardian UK.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That long form articles are not worth reading.
