Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I have used a typewriter and there is something about the action, sound and feel of typewriter keys that spur writing.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A journalist is a fact-teller and truth-seeker who informs, educates & entertains while inspiring deeper consideration on a subject.

What's your favorite social network?

TikTok. There are so many awesome creators there.

Who do you wish followed you?

Anyone and everyone who is interested in expanding knowledge on Black history, culture and figures making huge impacts in our community.

Why did you become a journalist?

I have always loved writing and storytelling. Reporting is an ultimate challenge of understanding the implications of current events.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I served in Student Leadership as the Student Body Parliamentarian. In grad school, I was Opinions Editor for The Connector.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'm proudest of an article on Trish Miller and SwemKidz. It raised the issue of drowning among kids of African descent.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Never be afraid to ask questions and always research as many sides of an issue as possible.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Mornings rock.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

The best pitch ever received was on the trans man experience of an immigrant from Zaire.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

The worst pitch I ever received was a feature on Mayim Bialik for Radiant Health Magazine. They were totally unfamiliar with the mag.

What's your favorite drink?

Water. It's refreshing.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Out on an adventure with my children or exploring Atlanta.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
