Powering Live News With Mobile Video Transmission
As The New York Times increases the amount of visual reporting in our live news coverage, R&D has been focusing on ways to transmit those visuals faster, easier and more reliably. Beam is an app developed by R&D to allow reporters in the field to file media and captions directly to the Times newsroom from their phones.
Creating Workflows for NeRF Portraiture
R&D is experimenting with storytelling applications of Neural Radiance fields (NeRF), a machine learning technique for achieving photorealistic detail in 3D. For over 5 years, The Times has been using photogrammetry to create high-quality 3D reconstructions. While photogrammetry is excellent at generating 3D models, it struggles to accurately represent reflection, transparency, fine details and some of the atmospheric qualities of light.

Accelerating Real-Time Coverage with Eclipse, a New Video Transmission App
R&D is creating ways to improve the workflow of Times video journalists using faster 5G cellular networks. Our new app Eclipse gives journalists the power to transmit professionally shot video footage using just a cellphone. The technology enables a new workflow that allows journalists to send footage from the field in real-time instead of leaving the scene of a story to find WiFi and file clips from a laptop.

Helping Journalists File Video in Real-time
Jonah Kessel was director of cinematography at The Times when protests erupted in Minneapolis in May of 2020 following the murder of George Floyd. The night that the Third Police Precinct in Minneapolis was set on fire, he was working the video desk coordinating with a crew of Times video journalists who were on the scene and had captured the moment the station went up in flames. Kessel called and told them to pull back.
They Survived Hurricane Dorian. Their Community Will Not.
"> This is what’s left of Sand Banks, a small community on Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas that was obliterated by Hurricane Dorian. Few houses here were strong enough to withstand the storm. Now the Haitian immigrants who lived in this shantytown will find it especially hard to rebuild. "> The tightly packed houses, mostly built with plywood and two-by-fours, were easily shredded.
