Powering the next wave of AI: Expanding capacity with our new datacenter in Pecos
Today, Microsoft is announcing one of the largest single capacity additions in our history. In Pecos, Texas, we will build a new datacenter campus, expanding our global datacenter capacity by approximately 2 gigawatts (GW) to meet strong and sustained customer demand for AI and cloud services across industries and regions. Beyond the technology, this is a major investment in West Texas.
Sustainable by design: Transforming datacenter water efficiency
Learn more about how we’re making progress towards our sustainability commitments through the Sustainable by design blog series, starting with Sustainable by design: Advancing the sustainability of AI. Last month, we unveiled our Datacenter Community Pledge, emphasizing that datacenters are not only the backbone of modern technology but also a force for good in the communities they serve.

Sharing the latest improvements to efficiency in Microsoft’s datacenters
Posted on November 2, 2022 In April, I published a blog that explained how we define and measure energy and water use at our datacenters, and how we are committed to continuous improvements. Now, in the lead up to COP27, the global climate conference to be held in Egypt, I am pleased to provide a number of updates on how we’re progressing in making our datacenters more efficient across areas such as waste, renewables, and ecosystems.
How Microsoft measures datacenter water and energy use to improve Azure Cloud sustainability
One of the biggest topics of discussion at COP26, the global climate conference held in November 2021, was how a lack of reliable and consistent measurement hampers progress on the path to Net Zero. I have been reflecting on this issue and, on this Earth Day, I would like to provide an update on how we are measuring energy and water use at our datacenters to improve sustainability across the Azure Cloud.
Made to measure: Sustainability commitment progress and updates
The climate is changing and calls to do something about it are intensifying. From the U.N. High-level Political Forum taking place this week in New York City to COP26 – the U.N.’s annual climate change conference in November – leaders are coming together to make decisions that will dictate the speed and scale of the global effort to stabilize our climate system. At Microsoft we are not only tracking these conversations closely but also engaging in them – and we are, in a way, mirroring them.
Expanding cloud services: Microsoft launches its sustainable datacenter region in Arizona
Today we are launching our newest sustainable datacenter region in Arizona, known as “West US 3.” Datacenters are today’s engine for modern business, providing organizations of all sizes the cloud services and tools to innovate, collaborate, and operate securely and efficiently at scale. We build datacenters around the globe to address increased customer demand for Microsoft cloud services, and we do so with sustainability firmly in mind.
Microsoft will establish its next U.S. datacenter region in Georgia’s Fulton and Douglas Counties
Datacenters are part of today’s critical infrastructure—providing reliable and scalable compute power for online transactions, conference calls, virtual classrooms, supply chain and inventory management, internet searches, and much more around the world. We are continuing to build our cloud infrastructure to support the growing demand for cloud services for business continuity, innovation, and collaboration.
Achieving 100 percent renewable energy with 24/7 monitoring in Microsoft Sweden
Earlier this year, we made a commitment to shift to 100 percent renewable energy supply in our buildings and datacenters by 2025. On this journey, we recognize that how we track our progress is just as important as how we get there.
Aiming for more than just net zero
Noelle Walsh Corporate Vice-President, Cloud Operations + Innovation Climate experts across the globe agree: if we can’t drastically reduce carbon emissions, our planet will face catastrophic consequences. Microsoft has operated carbon neutral since 2012, and in January 2020 Brad Smith announced our commitment to going carbon negative by 2030. This isn’t a goal we can reach in one easy swoop—it will take time, dedication, and many small steps that coalesce into something greater.
Microsoft Sustainability Calculator helps enterprises analyze the carbon emissions of their IT infrastructure
Noelle Walsh Corporate Vice-President, Cloud Operations + Innovation For more than a decade, Microsoft has been investing to reduce environmental impact while supporting the digital transformation of organizations around the world through cloud services. We strive to be transparent with our commitments, evidenced by our announcement that Microsoft’s cloud datacenters will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy sources by 2025.
