Abiotic and biotic controls of non-native perennial plant success in drylands - Nature Ecology & Evolution
Abstract Drivers of non-native plant success in drylands are poorly understood. Here we identify functional differences between dryland native and non-native perennial plants and assess how biotic, abiotic and anthropogenic factors shape the success of the latter. On the basis of plant community and functional trait data from 98 sites across 25 countries, we report a total of 41 non-native plant species at 31 sites. Non-natives tend towards faster growth strategies than natives.
Severity of topsoil compaction controls the impact of skid trails on soil ecological processes
1 INTRODUCTION In its recent Directive on Soil Monitoring and Resilience (Directive 2023/418, 2023), the EU underscored the significance of topsoil and subsoil compaction as key elements of soil degradation. To sustainably safeguard soil functions and prevent harmful soil changes, the German Federal Soil Protection Act also sets soil compaction due to mechanical stress as an important threat to soils.
Increasing plant species richness by seeding has marginal effects on ecosystem functioning in agricultural grasslands
4 DISCUSSION To overcome the limitations of both observational and strongly controlled BEF studies, we created within-site plant species richness gradients via seeding of multiple sites. This enabled us to separate the effects of among-site (covarying with environmental drivers) and within-site effects of species richness on ecosystem functioning (Enders & Tofighi, 2007).
Landscape management strategies for multifunctionality and social equity - Nature Sustainability
|
Abstract Increasing pressure on land resources necessitates landscape management strategies that simultaneously deliver multiple benefits to numerous stakeholder groups with competing interests. Accordingly, we developed an approach that combines ecological data on all types of ecosystem services with information describing the ecosystem service priorities of multiple stakeholder groups.

The supply of multiple ecosystem services requires biodiversity across spatial scales - Nature Ecology & Evolution
|
Abstract The impact of local biodiversity loss on ecosystem functioning is well established, but the role of larger-scale biodiversity dynamics in the delivery of ecosystem services remains poorly understood. Here we address this gap using a comprehensive dataset describing the supply of 16 cultural, regulating and provisioning ecosystem services in 150 European agricultural grassland plots, and detailed multi-scale data on land use and plant diversity.

Contribution of the soil seed bank to the restoration of temperate grasslands by mechanical sward disturbance
The restoration of grasslands is one of the primary targets of nature conservation. An easy tool to stimulate the growth of plant species currently absent from the aboveground vegetation but hidden in the “dark”, is to make use of the soil seed bank. Here, seeds of rare and endangered species may still be present. However, the potential contribution of soil seed banks to effective grasslands restoration still remains unclear, as some but not many valuable species built up a persistent seed bank.
