Reader's View: Help criminals instead of executing them
A widely debated topic is the death penalty: whether it should be legal and whether it is ethical. The death penalty is the punishment of execution to someone legally convicted of a capital crime. The death penalty is legal in 27 states. But isn’t it a little hypocritical to commit the same crime the accused committed? There are many reasons why the death penalty is enforced. It cuts down the number of people in prisons, saves the government money, and gives people justice. But at what cost?
Reader's View: Questions about 148th go beyond noise
In the Jan. 12 article, “ Turbulent flight: Airport tackles noise complaints, ” Audra Flanagan, spokesperson for the 148th Fighter Wing, said, “We need the community to take an honest look at us once in a while.” The article addressed noise issues and complaints associated with the Minnesota Air National Guard wing. I wish other leaders had the guts to display the same leadership and responsibility — especially our Supreme Court! Opinion by Ronald L. Johnson, Saginaw January 29, 2022 12:51 PM I appreciate that Mayor Emily Larson put the health and welfare of Duluth citizens above politics with her recent mask mandate (“ Duluth City Council backs mayor's mask mandate ,” Jan. 19).
Reader's View: Stauber opposed bill to prevent forest fires
As I sat in our cabin looking out at the charred remains of the forest and thought of my half dozen neighbors who lost their cabins on our lake and the equal number of families who lost everything on the next lake, I grew angry at Congressman Pete Stauber.
Memories of Bob Scholes
You might think that a founder of Brown’s infamous semiotics program—later the Department of Modern Culture and Media (MCM)—would be an ivory tower cliché, a deconstructionist didact looking down at the rest of us mere mortals giddy over binge reading and binge watching for the sheer pleasure of the experience.
