Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Reporter for a weekly newspaper in Alexandria, Virginia.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lou Grant (as portrayed by Ed Asner), of course, followed by Henry Hackett from "The Paper " and James Gannon from "Teacher's Pet.)

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email initially, then phone or email followup.

Why did you become a journalist?

I was part of the generation that saw "All The President's Men" and then started applying to journalism schools.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes. Was editor of my high school newspaper in Fairfax County, Va.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Stories that held public officials accountable or exposed a problem, and those that captured a person or place.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Work hard. Be curious. Get out of the newsroom and talk to people in person. Check your facts, then check them again.
