Exploring the idea of buying a STR
Forum Categories All Member since 2026 · 1 post · 2 votes I have interests in buying STR in Florida. Currently live in MN and have fears after buying, I will wish I didn't. Anyone out there have those same feelings but are happy they did it? Secondly, the financial burden of paying for the mortgage, maintenance and management of the place seems very stressful.

Forum Categories All Lender · Houston, TX · Member since 2026 · 35 posts · 8 votes 1h Connor, with about $20,000 expected by year-end, the duplex house-hack option is worth comparing first because it could let you add a rental unit while keeping the purchase owner-occupied. Before using equity from your current home, I would run the payment, expected rents, reserves, and closing costs for all three paths side by side.

On a HAP deal, the lender doesn't care what the 1007 says the market rent could be — they underwrite to the contract rent that's actually in place, because that's the income they can count on.

Depending on where you are with the new purchase, a DSCR loan that qualifies on the rent could take some pressure off, and once there's a bit more equity a portfolio refi across both could free up cash.

I'd push for a set release price per house so you can sell one off without refinancing the whole thing, and get the balloon and cross-default terms in writing before you sign. If you want something to compare against the bank, we fund rental portfolios in 30+ states and could quote the 20-house package.
