David Sobotta’s Biography

I started writing for the web in 2004 with my View From The Mountain (VFTM) and my Applepeels blogs. Both still get posts. In the fall 2022, I wrote my fifteen hundredth post on VFTM. I have written articles or collaborated on articles with the Guardian, the Raleigh News & Observer, and the WSJ. I wrote technology articles for ReadWrite and have written travel articles for local websites. I have also published five books covering topics ranging from my career at Apple to how North Carolina has changed since the fifties. I grew up in the Piedmont of North Carolina. My high school years were at McCallie School, a military school, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, followed by college at Harvard. After Harvard, I lived on the shore of the Bay of Fundy and eventually built and ran a large cattle operation in the foothills of New Brunswick until 1982 when I went to work in a computer store. By 1984, I was working at Apple where my career lasted until 2004 when I flew a little too close to the sun and stepped on a few toes trying to do right by customers. I have been a network consultant for the former National Lambda Rail, a vice president at an email services company, a real estate agent, and since 2013, I have been a vice president at WideOpen Networks, a company that builds fiber networks. My opinions are mine and not those of WideOpen Networks.
