Greens at the Ready
I love to cook almost as much as I like to eat…which is nice, because they tend to go hand-in-hand. When it comes to the former, I prefer to go as fresh as possible, preparing everything “from scratch” if I have the time. But as it is the case for all, time is often not my greatest luxury, so pre-prep is key. When it comes to fresh herbs and even some veggies, especially sturdy leafy greens like kale and chard or collard greens, you can save yourself a little time by having them at the ready.
Egg on Egg on Egg
An egg shell in your scrambled masterpiece or your baked good or your whatever, can ruin the dish, or at least ruin your enjoyment of the dish. I don’t know about you, but once I crunch through an eggshell, I’m done…I can no longer enjoy the dish. I’m not one of those that can power through the rest of the muffin. If you’ve ever cracked an egg into a bowl and a chunk of shell follows it in, you know how elusive those shards can be.
I Was Told There'd Be No Math
Happy Valentine’s Day! Though an occasion of varying participation, the majority of us will do something for our special someone today. And for many of us, especially those of us in the “parents of young children” arena, that something will involve baking. My kids really wanted to bake and decorate a cake for Mom this year, but not just any cake…a heart-shaped cake.
Be Like Oprah | 95.7 Duke FM
Bacon wrapped water chestnuts…it is a favorite appetizer of mine for as long as I can remember. We don’t make them a lot in our house, but when we do, we make copious amounts and they don’t last long. Despite our relatively healthy spread for the Super Bowl on Sunday, I did whip up a double batch for my wife and me to snack on. People make different versions of this toothpicked delicacy…ours contains brown sugar.
Nick's Tip: Nail Polish to the Rescue
I don't know if they "just don't make 'em like they used to," or if I just have an incredible set of dinnerware. The last time I dropped a dish on a tile floor, it exploded into a million pieces. When my daughter dropped a plate on our new tile floor, the plate took it like a champ. The floor? Not so much. So what to do...what to do? You could certainly leave it. You could replace the entire tile (which is a bit dramatic). You could go to a flooring place and invest in a repair kit.

The Seedy Underbelly
What's that smell? We've all been there - you're preparing dinner and you catch a whiff of somethin' awful wafting through the air. Pinpointing the source often proves elusive - you check the fridge, sniff the garbage can, bury your face in the dishwasher, and then you finally figure it out...the garbage disposal. Garbage disposals are nasty places. They're great, but they are rich with odor potential, so cleaning it is critical.
Don't Worry About Looking Silly
Winter walking can be treacherous - and I'm not talking about the getting exercise type of walking. Simply walking from one's car to the door can be treacherous in winter, especially on a day like today. So if you must be out and about, and pretty much all of us do in some capacity, hit up your kids' sandbox first.
Easy Cure for Limp Veggies
Vegetables…fresh is the best, but sometimes you just can use it all before it starts to go limp. It’s not that the food has gone bad, it just develops poor posture. There is an insanely easy “hack” to revitalize your limp veggies. The primary cause of veggie dysfunction is dehydration. After picking and especially after storing in the fridge, the vegetable’s cells collapse as the water leaches out. Carrots, broccoli, lettuce, celery, they can fade pretty quickly.
Perhaps Broadway Joe Should Have Worn These
In his famous pantyhose commercial, NFL legend Joe Namath proclaimed that he was not a wearer of the product, but they sure made his legs look good: Well, perhaps Joe should have worn them, for pantyhose are a fantastic weapon against winter's chill. Nylon is thin, tightly woven, and repels water, making it the ideal secondary layer...yes, even for men. There is no shame in this cold weather remedy, fellas. Avoid the bulk and sacrifice nothing in the warmth department.
Bounce Away Residue
Stuck on, baked on, dried on: no matter how stuff gets on other stuff, getting it off can be a pain. But no worries, mates...look to the Bounce (or whatever dryer sheet you have on hand). A dryer sheet is all you need. Scrub your bumper or your lawn mower or your tools or your vinyl siding or your cooktop - you can even soak pots and pans with a dryer sheet and you'll be amazed at how easily you can remove grime.
Look to the Golf Bag
It’s the most wonderful time of the year…but getting there can be a bear if you‘ve got mature trees and a desire to light ‘em up. Wobbly ladders and gusty winds is a recipe for disaster when it comes to putting Christmas lights high into your evergreen (or whatever tree you’ve got). But worse than doing nothing, is loading up the branches with a poorly executed design plan. There’s no hiding your deficiencies once the lights go on.
Garden Hose - Don't Forget
Short and sweet today. The weather has been fantastic this fall, but don't be lulled into a false sense of security when it comes to storing your equipment for the winter months, especially your hose. Your garden hose can be particularly stubborn this time of year. It's a sensitive little bugger. If you haven't yet brought it inside, you can get caught with your pants down, the outdoor temps never warming enough to make winding it up and storing it an easy task. But do not be troubled...
Let's Go To the Video Tape
For any parent, there are few things more terrifying than turning over the care of your little one(s) to that of a virtual stranger. Even if you know the baby sitter, you don’t really know the sitter…or you at least don’t feel like you really know the sitter until the sitter has had a go at your kiddo(s). What we sometimes forget is that the same holds true for the sitter. That caretaker is filled with plenty of anxiety, not the least of which is your kid(s).
It's a Hot Plate!
No matter how big your kitchen and how well laid out, there never seems to be enough burners or enough pots and pans. Or maybe that’s just me. I don’t know. One of the best ways to maximize space while minimizing inconvenience, is to utilize items for purposes for which they are not intended. Enter your coffee pot. The traditional drip coffee pot is a fantastic and underutilized appliance in the kitchen.
Sugar...SUGAR! Gimme the SUGAAAR!!!
No matter the context - a bet, a miscalculation, a complete accident - we have all been in the position of needing something to calm a burning mouth! It's tough to extinguish the heat of a jalapeno, but there is one surefire way that is easy and tasty. Gimme some sugar, baby! Who doesn't like an excuse to eat pure sugar? The heat of peppers is measured in something called Scoville Units.
