Schild analysis of the interaction between parthenolide and cocaine for their effects on planarian motility suggests an allosteric relationship.
Abstract Freshwater planarians are an emerging animal model in neuropharmacology due to the parallels of their nervous system with the nervous system of vertebrates. Cocaine is a naturally occurring abused drug and the "founding member" of the local anesthetic family. Sesquiterpene lactones of the parthenolide class are naturally occurring products that act as behavioral and physiological antagonists of cocaine in planarians and rats, respectively.

A Toxic Tale: This Scorpion Can Make Two Kinds of Venom
Venom, it turns out, is not a one-size-fits-all defense mechanism. Certain venomous creatures can modify the toxic stuff they spit out, depending on what they need to use it for. The Southern African scorpion, Parabuthus transvaalicus, doesn't just look mean—it's big, too (it can grow up to about 5 inches long). This particular species is known by several names, including the Transvaal thick-tailed scorpion, the Transvaal fat-tailed scorpion, the dark scorpion, and the spitting scorpion.
Episode 003 - So, you want to write about science? (or How to write and publish a science book in 10 easy-ish steps).
Episode notes I must thank you in advance for you kindness and patience with me. This is the very first time that I have ever interviewed someone, and I was nervous as heck, but I eventually calmed down and began to actually have fun with it. So again, thank you! Peter and I had a fun conversation where we talked about science, astronomy, biology, global warming, astrobiology and the origin of life, the writing process, advice to aspiring writers, and many other topics.
