Supreme Court to rule Friday on student loans, LGBTQ rights
Response to groundloop (Original post) Thu Jun 29, 2023, 04:40 PM 4. The vile piece of bigoted crap in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis has no standing, but I am sure at least 5 vile SC justices will find for her. Next will be Gay marriage and the right to adopt. And even if she had "standing" her case would be bullshit and discrimination. But not with these liars. I want to be wrong.

Exclusive: Russia set to mothball damaged Nord Stream gas pipelines - sources
Response to oldsoftie (Reply #1) Fri Mar 3, 2023, 02:12 PM 4. This winter has been exceptionally mild Next winter might be a lot worse and there will be hardship. I doubt the EU much cares, they knew being dependent on Russia for gas was a bad idea, it was just so cheap that it wasn't cost effective to move to other power sources. The pipeline can be repaired but it's expensive.

U.S. regulators rejected Elon Musk's bid to test brain chips in humans, citing safety risks
Source: Reuters On at least four occasions since 2019, Elon Musk has predicted that his medical device company, Neuralink, would soon start human trials of a revolutionary brain implant to treat intractable conditions such as paralysis and blindness. Yet the company, founded in 2016, didn’t seek permission from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) until early 2022 – and the agency rejected the application, seven current and former employees told Reuters.
Tesla says it will cut costs of next generation cars in half
Response to SouthernDem4ever (Reply #1) Wed Mar 1, 2023, 09:26 PM 7. I would. Elon Musk is a butthole, but he is NOT Tesla. In fact, Tesla has a whole group of people who 'manage Musk.' Seriously. Because Musk is an idiot. But again, he is NOT Tesla. Remember that if Tesla goes belly up, 127,855 human beings will lose their jobs, their livelihoods. Because I can well imagine, and so can you, I'm sure, someone joining Tesla right after college because of their ideals.

The US will likely reach its debt limit on Thursday. What comes next is predictable

The only two years in US history when there was no debt came as then-President Andrew Jackson was blowing up the banking system and immediately preceded the Panic of 1837 and a major depression. ... Recent major conflagrations over the debt and spending, in 1995 and 2011, occurred under Democratic presidents who lost control of the House to Republicans. ...
U.S. will begin 'extraordinary measures' to stay under debt limit
Response to Autumn (Reply #2) Fri Jan 13, 2023, 12:39 PM 5. Nothing that might affect the MIC, that's for sure I knew of a contractor who had a grimy little factory making plastic thinga-majigs for the Army - until Bush invaded Iraq. He died a few years ago, and left his widow an oceanfront mansion worth $15 million. She sold it recently - top dollar. Budget crisis or no budget crisis - can't have anything get in the way of that, you know.

Climate warming methane emissions rising faster than ever, study says
Response to mahatmakanejeeves (Original post) Wed Oct 26, 2022, 12:07 PM 2. The scariest part? It could be a feedback that cutting fossil methane use can't touch: Scientists are studying whether the unusually large increases in atmospheric methane levels in 2020 and 2021 are the result of a “climate feedback” from nature-based sources such as tropical wetlands and rice paddies or whether they are the result of human-made natural gas and industrial leakage. Or both.
Buttigieg expresses no regret for American Rescue Plan amid high inflation
Response to Yo_Mama_Been_Loggin (Original post) Sun Oct 16, 2022, 01:18 PM 4. imo, Buttigieg is countering the NYT front page horse race headline. If any Democrat can, it's him. The NYT points out all the good stuff Dems and Biden have done now -- while back then, the NYT had not pointed out the strong points of Dems' paid out rescue money. NOW, the NYT says all that spending is a "problem" since Republicans say it is. This is the media horse race bullshit our party has to put up with.

ACT test scores drop to lowest in 30 years in pandemic slide
Response to Omaha Steve (Original post) Wed Oct 12, 2022, 11:03 PM 3. This will be blamed on distance learning when the real culprit is probably COVID infections that students have been subjected to en masse because "it's like the flu" and kids need to get back to school. Long COVID is an mfer. Brain fog isn't easily detectable - except, perhaps, by ACT test scores.

U.S. Supreme Court backs Republican in Pennsylvania ballots case
Response to Yo_Mama_Been_Loggin (Original post) Tue Oct 11, 2022, 01:17 PM 3. Had to read that 3 times to figure out what it was saying. So it sounds like that is the end of undated ballots being accepted although I think most counties were either tossing those or at least separating and tallying separately based on the various state court rulings. Justice Kagan cautions Supreme Court can forfeit legitimacy
Response to Hugh_Lebowski (Reply #8) Tue Sep 13, 2022, 10:17 PM 10. Being in denial or not wanting to say the quiet part out loud is actively counterproductive, imo. We need to light and stoke the fire under the people who are in position to deal with this proactively (Congress), and that effort is stymied by refusing to acknowledge the very very very big problem here. Senate Intelligence chair says briefing on Trump classified documents on hold
Response to Novara (Reply #6) Sun Sep 11, 2022, 04:08 PM 9. Is the DHS even actually allowed to peruse the security agencies' business? Been a question I've had ever since Bush Inc. created the DHS. It's always seemed to me that every "national security" organization we have was assembled to meet a single challenge and when that challenge was either deemed unmeetable or resolved they're still around looking for something to do.
Washington mayor declares public emergency over migrant arrivals from Texas, Arizona

Jon Stewart Tweet:
Response to applegrove (Reply #8) Tue Sep 6, 2022, 12:07 AM 9. "Reality has a liberal bias" Wasn’t it Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show” that coined that phrase, via Stephen Colbert? I don’t think Colbert had his own show yet, but he may have. In that case, it would have been “The Colbert Report” where it originated. Either way, both shows started with Jon. Georgia 2022: Walker Holds Two-Point Lead Over Warnock in Tight Senate Race; Kemp Leads Abrams by Fo
Response to kimbutgar (Reply #3) Wed Aug 31, 2022, 01:22 PM 39. I live in Georgia Very different voting patterns outside I-285 than inside (Atlanta is inside). I can confidently predict that Warnock and Kemp will win pretty easily. If republicans had run anyone other than a complete nutjob, Warnock would be in trouble. Lots of republicans (especially the moderate/educated ones) will just not vote for him because he is literally insane, and they recognize that.

My fault for assuming this point. Yes, she’s absolutely hated on the right. She has the quadruple whammy. Black, gay, female, “disrespected” the flag. Many people who are in the center and leftward feel she deserves her fate for being in Russia in the first place and then for breaking the their laws. I’m not so sure she wasn’t set up.

The public paid for these investigations, and the public deserves to know whatever the full Mueller team found. We supposedly have open government laws. It sure doesn’t seem so lately. Trump and Barr hid everything possible. If there is any information that would out a CIA or other intelligence operative in Russia, keep that secret.
Ukraine savages idea of concessions to end war, evokes appeasement of Nazis
Response to blue-wave (Original post) Thu May 26, 2022, 06:05 AM 4. Some Western leaders will likely pressure Zelensky to give up territory to stop the war. The war is hurting every country in one way or another, and leaders worried about their economies tanking may be getting nervous. Food is becoming scarce in some areas while inflation is certainly a problem here and in other countries. But the pressure should be on Putin, not Zelensky. Whatever sanctions are left should should be imposed now.
