OUTER APPLY Fundamentals: Part 2
Introduction In Part 1 of this series, we explored how CROSS APPLY can be used to retrieve related rows based on values from the current row of the outer table. One important characteristic of CROSS APPLY is that it returns only rows where the correlated query produces a result. Sometimes, however, we need to return every row from the outer table, even when no matching rows exist. For example, a report may need to list all customers, including those who have never placed an order.
CROSS APPLY Fundamentals: Part 1
Introduction In day-to-day SQL Server development, most queries rely on familiar operators such as INNER JOIN and LEFT JOIN. These work well when data can be matched through straightforward relationships between tables. Some requirements are less straightforward. For example, you might need to return the most recent order for each customer or retrieve the top N rows within each group. These problems can be solved in several ways, but the resulting queries are not always easy to read.
SELECT * - SQLServerCentral
SELECT * feels convenient, but in SQL Server it bloats I/O, burns network bandwidth, blocks covering-index usage, and makes code brittle when schemas change. Specify only the columns you need—your DBAs (and your latency) will thank you. Top 5 reasons Extra I/O and bigger result payloads Fetching every column—including wide MAX types—moves more data from disk and across the network than needed, hurting throughput.
Meta AI by Facebook: A New Contender in the AI Battle
Introduction Meta AI from Facebook is one of the last big technology giants’ contenders in the AI battle. In our first article, we created a demo about ChatGPT. Secondly, we talked about Bing from Microsoft, who is now Copilot. Thirdly, we mentioned Bard from Google, which is Gemini now. However, Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook did not want to be out of the AI party. Now we have Meta AI incorporated into WhatsApp or in Facebook. We can also use Meta AI in the browser.
The Power of Generate_series
Featuring datetrunc and date_bucket An SQL text by Erland Sommarskog, SQL Server MVP. Most recent update 2024-10-31. Copyright applies to this text. See here for font conventions used in this article. Introduction SQL 2022 introduced the function generate_series which permits us to solve problems for which we previously had to use a table of numbers (also known as a "tally table").

ER Diagram + SQL: Online Shopping System Project
Entity-Relationship Diagrams (ER Diagrams or ERDs) are one of the most popular tools for database design. They visually represent the entities (objects or concepts) within a system and the relationships between them. ER Diagrams are essential for database engineers and developers because they provide a blueprint for how data is structured and connected.
Using OFFSET for Paging – SQLServerCentral
Paging is a common query that developers will use when retrieving results from a table. Often an application may want to display 10 or 20 results, knowing there might be 100 or more. The first request could be using just the top 10, with subsequent requests wanting just 10 results, but from a later part of the entire result set. While there are a number of ways of coding this, I wanted to examine how the OFFSET and FETCH commands in T-SQL in this article.
The Zero to N Parameter Problem (Sql Server 2005 and Up -- Update) – SQLServerCentral
(Note: We are re-running this as we had a newsletter issue last week) While this topic has been discussed before, here is another look at the "Multiple but Optional Parameters" issue in T-SQL. Sometimes you want to write a stored procedure which returns one or more Result(s), but you may or may not want to pass in some parameters. A comma delimited list just does not seem to cut it anymore, and dynamic SQL isn't a good idea.
Understanding Tinyint Vs Int Inner Join
Learn how to use inner joins with composite keys in SQL Server, focusing on tinyint and int data types for efficient data retrieval. The framework for autonomous intelligence In SQL Server, a composite key is a combination of two or more columns in a table that can uniquely identify a row in that table. This is particularly useful when a single column is not sufficient to ensure uniqueness.
Entity Framework Core Oracle Overview
Explore how Entity Framework Core integrates with Oracle databases for efficient data management in AI software development. The framework for autonomous intelligence To integrate Entity Framework Core with an Oracle Database, you need to follow a series of steps that ensure a smooth connection and efficient data handling. This process involves configuring the necessary settings and utilizing the appropriate drivers.
