I’ve never understood why Bellini’s Norma has remained such a staple of the repertoire. It contains one mildly pleasurable aria in ‘Casta Diva’, but the rest of the opera is more concerned with the superficial beauty of the bel canto style than offering an emotional insight into its characters. How many times must a pleasant major-key melody waft blissfully over arpeggiated strings in a manner quite at odds with the emotional tenor of the scene in question?
