What is the gender expression fund? – The Oxford Student
LGBTQ+ students’ mental health and wellbeing is consistently among the lowest levels of all university students, and this experience is heightened for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals. The Stonewall ‘Trans Report’ revealed that more than a third of trans university students (36 per cent) in higher education have experienced negative comments or behaviour from staff in the last year.
Exploring the queer politics of Eurovision – The Oxford Student
Eurovision has always held a special place in my heart. Every year, we are treated to the campest performances from across the continent (and Australia, for some reason). Last year alone featured daring sets from a Finnish man in a spiked choker and green jacket covering only his arms singing an annoyingly catchy techno âCha Cha Chaâ, to two Austrian women singing about being possessed by American writer Edgar Allen Poe.
Power, family and class: The Hidden Case of Ewan Forbes review – The Oxford Student
With LGBT+ History month just around the corner, it is the perfect time to pick up a copy of Zoë Playdon’s ‘The Hidden Case of Ewan Forbes’, the incredible story of a trans man who fought to have his true gender and identity recognised in the face of extreme challenges. Born into an aristocratic Scottish family, Ewan Forbes was assigned female at birth but presented as a boy from a young age.
Would a Labour government improve LGBTQ+ rights in the UK? – The Oxford Student
At the moment in Westminster, all eyes are on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as to when the next General Election will be. Recent polling from the end of last year suggested that 56% of the British public think that Keir Starmer will be the next Prime Minister, and many in government are preparing for a Labour majority in the next year. Sunak has said that he expects to call a general election âin the second halfâ of 2024, whilst others speculate that the election will happen as soon as May.
Celebration and Unity at London Pride – The Oxford Student
London Pride was held on 1st July to conclude Pride month, uniting the LGBTQ+ community in one of the UK’s biggest parades. While I was cynical towards corporate floats and shallow political point-scoring, its real meaning is found in the diversity of peoples marching together under banners of togetherness. Messages of proud self-expression, trans-inclusivity, and international solidarity dominated Pride in London 2023.
Blane’s Style Files: What Style Should You Try Based on your College?
Everyone at Oxford knows that every college has its own unique vibe, so why not try to embody that vibe in your personal style? Here are my suggestions on how to dress like the vibe of your college. Christ Church – Tweed Tweed is an obvious choice for an old and slightly obnoxious college. Though brown and green tweeds have been around forever, Chanel popularised coloured tweeds in blue and pink, including the pink suit and hat worn by Jackie Kennedy when she visited Texas with JFK.
Why we still need Pride – The Oxford Student
Pride is something we talk about every year, but I feel I’ve seen increasing negativity towards the month. Maybe it’s because I’m a chronically online student journalist, but seeing people harass student activists online and turn on companies promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion seems to send a message of decreasing acceptance. If anything, it shows why the celebration is needed now more than ever.
Behind the BNOC: Babbling with Becky – The Oxford Student
For my last column interview, it was a lovely sunny day right before our JCR guest night formal, and I had sat on my blanket for the past three hours trying to finish an essay before remembering I had an interview. Luckily, my interviewee, Becky, was not only a sunshiney personality, but equally as in love with the sun, so we sat down on BNC New Quad to have a chat surrounded by the sounds of croquet and parents.
Oxford's Look-'Book': The Book Stop – The Oxford Student
It is now Sunday of Week 7 and only two weeks and five days remain until the end of exams (I’m eagerly counting down the hours, to the extent that I have a countdown on my phone, until 5:30pm on Friday 23rd of June). Unfortunately, this also means that it’s the last column of this series, and the final bookshop I will review.
Eastern European Expeditions: Mostar’s Unhealed Wounds – The Oxford Student
So yes, after the vague disappointment of the ‘party destinations’ of Split and Hvar, a more cultural excursion was on the cards. To Mostar we went. The coach journey was another special one. Initially, heading south down the Dalmatian Coast with the sun setting over my shoulder, the views were stupendous over the Med, and later, heading inland towards the border crossing into Bosnia, the views were stupendous over the Neretva river valley.
