Detection of the elusive dangling OH ice features at ~2.7 μm in Chamaeleon I with JWST NIRCam - Nature Astronomy
Abstract Ascertaining the morphology and composition of the icy mantles covering dust grains in dense, cold regions of the interstellar medium is essential to developing accurate astrochemical models, determining conditions for ice formation, constraining chemical interactions in and on icy grains and understanding how ices withstand space radiation. The widely observed infrared spectroscopic signature of H2O ice at ~3 μm discriminates crystalline from amorphous structures in interstellar ices.

Spectroscopic sizing of interstellar icy grains with JWST - Nature Astronomy
Abstract Clouds of gas and dust in the Galaxy are nurseries in which stars and planetary systems are born. During their journey from the diffuse interstellar medium to the protoplanetary disks, molecular solids accumulate on cold dust grains by accretion and surface chemistry. These so-called icy grains will continuously evolve, notably by collision and aggregation processes, modifying their sizes.
An Ice Age JWST inventory of dense molecular cloud ices - Nature Astronomy
|
Abstract Icy grain mantles are the main reservoir of the volatile elements that link chemical processes in dark, interstellar clouds with the formation of planets and the composition of their atmospheres. The initial ice composition is set in the cold, dense parts of molecular clouds, before the onset of star formation. With the exquisite sensitivity of the James Webb Space Telescope, this critical stage of ice evolution is now accessible for detailed study.

Deuterated forms of H3+ and their importance in astrochemistry
Abstract At the low temperatures (approx. 10 K) and high densities (approx. 100 000 H2 molecules per cm−3) of molecular cloud cores and protostellar envelopes, a large amount of molecular species (in particular those containing C and O) freeze-out onto dust grain surfaces. It is in these regions that the deuteration of H3+ becomes very efficient, with a sharp abundance increase of H2D+ and D2H+.
