Regarding our audio recordings
Earlier today we published an essay about OutKast by Dr. Regina Bradley. This is an essay written by a Black woman, about Black musicians, and edited by a Black man. I hired a white man to narrate the audio version of the essay, and that narrator decided to use an offensive stereotype of the American southern Black accent in his narration. This basically amounted to auditory blackface, in the worst tradition of racist minstrelsy. So why did I publish it?
Introducing 'Puestes pa'l futuro': words and images from a future, post-colonial Puerto Rico
Hi everyone! On Monday we launched a new project on Kickstarter — Puestes pa’l futuro is an anthology of English and Spanish short stories, written by Puerto Rican authors from the island as well as the diaspora, which tell stories of a future, post-colonial Puerto Rico. Each story will be illustrated by a different Puerto Rican visual artist, and each illustration will be printed as a silkscreen poster, as part of a limited-edition graphic album.
Announcing our Next Submissions Period
I’m pleased to announce that Fireside will be holding a submissions period from Monday, April 8 to Friday, April 12, 2019. This time around we’re looking for stories, poetry, and nonfiction pitches. We’re looking for fiction submissions of up to 1,500 words. We want stories of multiple lengths, but particularly stories under 750 words.
Year’s End, 2018
That’s it folks, that’s the show: we have now published everything on our editorial calendar for 2018. And we published a lot. Short short stories, long short stories, and plenty of things that were not stories at all. Fireside Magazine, which is eligible in the Best Semiprozine category for the Hugo Awards, published 52 stories, 11 essays, 12 illustrations and one illustrated poem in 2018.
On Beautiful Words
Writing is one of the most fundamental technologies humans possess. It is the most immediate and accessible way we’ve come up with to transmit our ideas to each other. Every movie, comic, song, advertisement — not to mention the stories you read here on Fireside — they all started out life as words on a surface.
Support Fireside - Subscribe to Fireside Quarterly
Dec 12, 2018 | announcement Support Fireside — Subscribe to Fireside Quarterly By Pablo Defendini Printed matter is experiencing a resurgence of the best kind: it’s a new golden age for indie magazines with a focus on quality content and immersive reading. I’ve made a career out of working on online publishing in one form or another for the past ten or so years, but I’ve always loved print.
Announcing this year's #BlackSpecFic editor
This year, while Cecily has been working on the numbers for the upcoming 2017#BlackSpecFic Report, Julia, Elsa, Meg and I got together to think about who best to helm the essays that accompany the Report, as our Special Features Editor. We think it’s time to take a deeper dive into issues surrounding Black representation in the genre short fiction field, and to take stock of how the landscape is changing.
Redefining Scripts for Better Masculinity
We’ve had a long run, fellow cis straight men. Thousands of years of patriarchy have allowed us to take what we want, when we want it, and live under the delusion that the world owes us everything, up to and including the attention (romantic, sexual, or otherwise) of others, particularly women. Well, time’s up.
We've been nominated for a Hugo award!
Wow, so turns out it wasn’t a holiday food induced fever dream — we actually are Hugo Award Semiprozine Finalists. How cool is that? Things have been a little wild over here between all of those holidays, wrapping up the first issue of Fireside Quarterly, and a few other cool-but-secret-for-now plans, but we want to take a few minutes to say “thank you.” We’re gonna do that here, because our mentions are still a mess. Thank you. Thank you for reading our work. Thank you for sharing our work.
We're Open to Artist Submissions
Starting today, and on an ongoing basis, Fireside is accepting illustration portfolio submissions. If you’re an artist, and would like to submit your portfolio for consideration, please fill out this form: As Fireside’s art director, I keep a little ‘gallery’ of artists, and I’m always on the lookout for new talent. When I have a new story that I need to match up with an illustrator, I go through our gallery and pick someone whose style I think works with the story.
Announcing the Hurricane Relief Bookstore
I grew up on an island. I grew up on the water; I grew up with storms. Hurricane prep is just part of life on the islands; it’s what we do. Most of the time, you get lucky and you don’t have to think about it too much. But sometimes the storm hits. And when that happens, we also know what to do: before the storm you secure what you can, during the storm you take shelter, and after the storm you recover, and you help each other.
Announcing The Fisher of Bones by Sarah Gailey
I’m pleased to announce that starting on August 2nd, Fireside will begin publishing The Fisher of Bones, a brand-new serial in twelve parts by none other than Sarah Gailey: The Prophet is dead. The eyes of the Gods have turned to his daughter. But she isn’t ready. Not for the whispers in her ear, for the divinations… for the blood. Her people’s history and their future, carved by ancients into the bones of long dead behemoths, are now her burden.
It's Awards Season
It’s awards season. And that means that it’s time for us to bug you, dear readers, about nominating and voting for some of our fantastic short fiction. We’ve been pretty low-key about this stuff for the last five years, but as much as we always say we don’t care about awards, that fact is that they do matter, if only in terms of visibility (I won’t lie—it’s nice to know that people dig our work, too).
