Francisco de Verascola, a Basque martyred in Georgia
On September 17, 1967, in the town of Gordexola close to Bilbao, Spain, an altar was built in the neighborhood of Beraskola where Friar Francisco de Verascola was born in 1564 (the dedication is pictured above). Every year since 1946, a celebration is held in memory of the friar who will soon be beatified in Savannah, Georgia on October 31st of this year. This last September, the current Bishop of Bilbao celebrated Mass at the altar.
Beatification of the Georgia Martyrs: What to expect?
As the Beatification Ceremony of Pedro de Corpa and Companions approaches on October 31st, here are a few things you can expect. The largest gathering of Catholics in the history of the Diocese of Savannah. Founded in 1850, the Diocese of Savannah has never had a large number of Catholics. As a matter of fact, the Catholic Church was forbidden in the original charter creating the colony of Georgia in 1733. Until the U.S. Constitution was adopted in 1789, Catholicism was not allowed.
Greatness in Life and Death: The Georgia Martyrs
These are the notes of a homily delivered on September 13th, 2026, one day before the anniversary of the martyrdom of Friar Pedro de Corpa, and just a few weeks before the Beatification Ceremony which will take place in Savannah, Georgia. The day after elected Pope in 2005, Pope Benedict received a group of German pilgrims at the Vatican. Among the thoughts he shared with them were these words which have become well known: “The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort.
The Catholic Unity of Faith and Reason
The Catholic Church is not afraid of human knowledge because it boldly professes that whenever one seeks truth regardless of discipline, one seeks He who is Truth, Jesus Christ. Contrary to the widespread assumption that religion is irrational and opposed to the pursuit of knowledge, the Catholic Church has historically been a champion of education.
A life of Dedication: Lessons of Father Fred
This article is in memory of Monsignor Fred Nijem who died earlier this year. He was my first Pastor after ordination in 2009. Picture at my farewell celebration at Sacred Heart, Warner Robins, June 2012 Still a newly ordained priest, I mentioned to my pastor, Father Fred Nijem, that I felt I was spending too much time working on my Sunday homilies.
Pope Leo to visit Peru in November
Peruvian President José María Balcazar Zeleda was received by Pope Leo XIV in an audience yesterday, where the President extended a formal invitation to the Pope to visit Perú. The Pope confirmed that he will visit this country which is so close to his heart this upcoming November. During the audience, the Pope expressed great joy in anticipation to his visit to Perú.
Martyrs of the Gospel: Pedro de Corpa and Companions
As I stepped out of the chapel at Franciscan University of Steubenville sometime in 2002, a light-brown brochure lying on a large table among countless prayer cards and pamphlets caught my eye—The Georgia Martyrs. I had never heard of these martyrs. Having been raised in Augusta, Georgia, I assumed they must be from the distant country of Georgia in the Caucasus.
Monsignor Rossetti removed from assignment
The Archbishop of Washington DC, Cardinal Robert McElroy, removed Monsignor Stephen Rossetti as an exorcist of the Archdiocese of Washington, and ended all affiliation between the Archdiocese and the Saint Michael Center for Spiritual Renewal, as affirmed by a statement issued on June 3rd, 2026 by the Archdiocese. Rossetti is a renowned Catholic priest, a licensed psychologist and author.
National Eucharistic Pilgrimage Visits Savannah
In honor of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America, the Catholic Church has organized a National Eucharistic Pilgrimage with the theme “One Nation Under God.” This Pilgrimage began in Saint Augustine, Florida, the oldest European settlement in the present-day United States, and will conclude in Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed.
God’s Grace Behind Bars
I often consider that the most forgotten members of society are the incarcerated. This is likely because many do not consider them part of society anymore – they have been confined to oblivion to pay for their crimes. The truth however is that the incarcerated, even those who have committed heinous crimes, are very much part of society. Their crimes do not diminish or erase their human dignity.
Saint Joseph Protector of Christ, Model for Families
The twentieth century Spanish Saint Saint Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer suggested that the most important male saint of the church is not a martyr, a priest or a bishop. The most important saint is a father, a husband and a worker – Saint Joseph. The reason Saint Josemaría gave was that Saint Joseph was given the critical and singular task to protect the presence of God in the world by protecting Jesus.
Georgia Martyrs to be Beatified October 31 in Savannah
Georgia Martyrs to be Beatified October 31, 2026, in Savannah, GA Savannah, GA — The Most Reverend Stephen D. Parkes, Bishop of Savannah, is pleased to announce that the beatification of the Venerable Servants of God Pedro de Corpa and his Four Companions – commonly known as the Georgia Martyrs – will take place on All Hallows Eve (October 31) 2026 in Savannah, GA.
Seeking God At Christmas
Where do you look for God? Where do you feel most connected or closest to Him? In what place? Doing what? There was once a very wealthy king in the Middle East who had a vast, powerful kingdom. He always looked for opportunities to increase his wealth, but he also had great desire to grow closer to God in the spiritual life, but he didn’t seem to be very successful at it. One night, the king woke up and heard stomping on the roof of his palace, right over his bedroom.
Homilia Para Fiesta De Nuestra Señora De Guadalupe
The Persistence Of Time
Growing up, hanging in the living room of my house was a metal square clock with red numbers and a pale white background. The clock was quite unusual, always making it a conversation piece. The numbers were not in the correct place – it appeared as if they had been shaken up and fallen out of place. Most were jumbled on the lower right-hand side of the clock. Another clock ticked in the dining room.
I Came From A Third World, Failed State
I was born in what many consider a third world country. I left that country at a time when it was considered by the whole world a failed state. Inflation in 1988 was 1,722%. By the early 90s, local currency would lose half of its value overnight. Terrorist groups controlled the majority of the national territory. The state could not guarantee the security of its citizens.
Pope And Patriarch Commemorate Nicean Creed
The Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew the First issued an invitation to the Pope and the heads of the ancient Apostolic Christian Churches to gather at Nicea in order to commemorate together the 1700 years of the Nicean Creed. During his first Apostolic Journey, Pope Leo XIV has traveled to Nicea today for a moving and significant ecumenical prayer service on the shore of Lake Iznik.
US Bishops Statement On Immigration
During the gathering of U.S. Bishops in Baltimore this week, the Bishops issued the statement below to address the current reality faced by immigrants. Today is the feast of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini who gave her life in the service of Italian immigrants who were marginalized and forgotten in the late 19th century. Her spirit continues in the U.S. Church, as we respond to the needs of today’s immigrants.
Feeding The Hungry At Church
Last week, I was interviewed about the food pantry we run at my parish. We assist mostly needy parishioners with food, diapers, hygiene products and occasionally with utilities. When we opened it last year, it was in response to more and more requests for help from parishioners – I never imagined it would get the traffic it has received since January of this year. It has grown from just one rack of canned goods in our parish kitchen, to one room and a half of our parish office.
Gratitude From Uzbekistan
During my first full day in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, we visited the city market. After being duly impressed by the diversity of products, stunning tomatoes, and the ovens where bread was baked both sideways and upside-down, it was time for lunch. Though the food hall was large, it appeared as if every stall sold the same food: kebabs cooked over coals, a type of spaghetti with horse meat, and different types of sausage. Roaming vendors offered a few other options.
Don Bosco: Fe Y Deporte
Don Bosco: Faith And Sports
The industrial revolution reached Northern Italy before the rest of the Italian boot, primarily the city of Turin located closest to the borders with Switzerland and France. Immediately after his ordination to the priesthood, John Bosco arrived to the rapidly developing city in 1841. He experienced first-hand the negative effects of industrialization in the family and the faith.
A Visit To Nicea 1700 Years Later
In the year 325 AD, about 300 bishops of the early Church gathered in the city of Nicea, located southeast of the new imperial capital of Constantinople. The reason for the unprecedented gathering of bishops was to clarify the relationship between God the Father and Jesus Christ. 1700 years later, the vast majority of Christians continue to profess the faith as it was expressed in the Nicene Creed. Jesus is of the same substance of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God.

Understanding Terminology: Hispanic Or Latino?
While I was in the seminary in Rome, I worked at Santa Maria della Luca Parish in the Trastevere district of the city. The parish was one of several churches designated by the Diocese of Rome to be part of the Latin American Mission. At that time, the second largest group of immigrants living in the city hailed from my native country of Peru. For two years, every Thursday evening I worked with a lay missionary group, and I assisted at Mass on Sundays.
Navigating Negativity: Pope Leo And Catholic Media
On May 12th, 2025, the newly elected Pope Leo XIV held an audience with the many journalists who had been eagerly waiting to see white smoke emerge from the roof of the Sistine Chapel. He concluded his remarks to the hundreds of members of the media stating, “You are at the forefront of reporting on conflicts and aspirations for peace, on situations of injustice and poverty, and on the silent work of so many people striving to create a better world.
Homily: Who Do You Struggle To Love?
Who is my neighbor? A great question asked to Jesus in today’s Gospel. This parable breaks through every prejudice that exists. It tears through every hatred or resentment we may hold toward another person or group of people. Why do I say this? Because this parable points to one of the most fundamental teachings of the Christian faith: every human person is my neighbor, because every person is created in the image and likeness of God.
Los Angeles Archbishop Speaks On Immigration
Archbishop José Gómez is not a stranger to speaking on immigration issues. As Archbishop of Los Angeles while the press shows protests and riots in the city, he has issued the statement below. I echo the sentiments of the Archbishop, that Congress has failed to pass immigration reform for forty years.
Unexpected Origin Of Jubilee Years
The 2025 worldwide Jubilee, Pilgrims of Hope, was called by Pope Francis following the tradition established by Pope Boniface VIII in the year 1300 when he called the first Jubilee Year in the Catholic Church. Most current explanations I have read about the celebration of a Catholic Jubilee cite the Jewish practice of a Jubilee as described in the Book of Leviticus, but Pope Boniface is rarely (if ever) mentioned.
Cardinal Sturla On Pope’s First Trip To Latin America
Yesterday, Cardinal Daniel Sturla Berhouet, SDB of Montevideo, Uruguay gave an interview to CARVE radio in Montevideo to discuss his general experiences of the conclave which elected Pope Leo XIV. Uruguay is the least Catholic country of Latin America, with only 38% of the population identifying as such, and 52% affirming they have no religion (2023). “What was going through your mind as you walked to the conclave?” asked the reporter.
Missionary Pope From The Peripheries
Pope Leo XIV welcomed yesterday in the Apostolic Palace a delegation from Chiclayo, the city where he served as bishop for nine years. Included in the delegation was Mr. Jose Pérez Flores, regional governor of Lambayeque, the province where Chiclayo is located. Pérez Flores extended an invitation to the Holy Father to visit Chiclayo. Pope Francis often spoke of his dream of a missionary Church that goes out to the peripheries or margins of society.
The Mystery Of Creation, Nature And Grace
It is not necessary to know how something works, to understand that it works. I grew up in the countryside, and observed first-hand the work of nature: seeds sown in the right soil with enough water bring forth new life from the earth. It is not necessary to grasp how this comes about to know that the earth generates life.
Pope Addresses Journalists
The past several days have been very exciting with our newly elected Pope all over the news, both Catholic and secular. I have seen excellent moments where our faith is shared and explained especially in secular media sources. It’s appropriate that so early in his Papacy, Leo XIV held an audience with journalists from all over the world. He said to them, “Your service, with the words you use and the style you adopt, is crucial.
Greeting To Pope Leo XIV By Peruvian President Boluarte
Mrs. Dilma Boluarte, President of Peru, greeted the Peruvian citizen Pope Leo XIV with these words upon receiving the news of his election as successor to Pope Francis. Despite the difficult political situation facing Peru, I think it is important to come together and celebrate this great event. Here are President Boluarte’s words: texto en español We celebrate a historic moment for Peru and the world.
Saludo A Leon XIV De Presidenta Peruana Boluarte
Pope’s Friend: Our Pope, What He Comes To Know, He Loves
I just listened to two interviews performed in Peru to Father Pablo Larrán, an Augustinian priest working in Northern Peru and personal friend of Pope Leo XIV. I was struck by his words, “The new Pope is a person who loves, who feels deeply. Our Pope, what he comes to know, he loves.
A Pope With A Pastor’s Heart
This afternoon the world greeted Pope Leo XIV as he stood at the loggia of Saint Peter Basilica overlooking the thousands who had gathered. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, born in Chicago and missionary for many years as an Augustinian priest in Peru, has become Leo XIV. “Peace be with you!” he said to us. The words of the Risen Christ. I first heard of Cardinal Prevost when in 2023 Pope Francis appointed him prefect of the Dicastry of Bishops in Rome.
The Heart Of Pope Francis: Mercy And Mission
This is an opinion piece I wrote for the Savannah Morning News After he was elected Pope on March 13th, 2013, I carefully followed every one of Pope Francis’ public appearances.
Fulfillment In Work: A Lesson From A Waffle House Visit
On a Monday afternoon, I swung the door open into a Waffle House. To my surprise, I was the only customer. I sat at the bar. Before the waitress approached me, the cook looked over my way and asked, “do you know what you want?” I always know what I want at Waffle House. I ordered my usual All-Star Special with hashbrowns, bacon, and a regular waffle directly from the cook.
The Legacy Of Savannah’s Bishop Vérot
In early 2024, I visited Saint Paul Catholic Church in Ellicott City, Maryland, an old mill town a few miles west from Baltimore. The town had been terribly devastated a few years prior by flash floods. A welcoming secretary opened the parish church, which stood atop a hill overlooking the busy main road. A plaque inside the church noted that in that place in 1914, the baseball legend Babe Ruth married Helen Woodford.
Why Ukraine Still Fights? Consider Its National Anthem
The answer to the question might be found in the words of the Ukrainian National Anthem. When I taught English at the Ukrainian Catholic University in southwestern Ukraine in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, every single day began with the singing of the National Anthem. All the students and teachers lined up in front of the flag by the dining room, and everyone sang loudly and proudly. We the teachers, mostly from the United States, sang along.
What Do Darien, Georgia And Vatican City Have In Common?
Darien is a small city along Highway 17 off the coast of Georgia in McIntosh County. Darien was well known in the past as the exit point for lumber from central Georgia. Logs were transported by river to the city from which they were hauled off in ships to London and other major cities of the world. Today, it is mostly known for its shrimping industry and stunning views of nature. What can the quaint city of Darien have in common with Vatican City State?
Frank Pavone Post Compromises His Pro-life Stance
Frank Pavone, the defrocked Roman Catholic priest most known for being the founder and national director of the civil organization Priests for Life, recently posted the following on his social media regarding President Trump’s executive order seeking to expand the availability of in vitro fertilization (IVF). “On IVF: don’t overthink what Pres Trump is doing or why he does not share our moral position. He wants to help families have babies, because he believes life is a beautiful blessing.
