What was your first job as a journalist?
Writing for my college newspaper.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
No, but I feel an unreasonable urge to own and use one.
How is social media changing news?
People consume content mainly through social media. So publications have to post their content on socials and remain active to stay relevant
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
I really enjoyed the two characters, Beth and Jennifer, from a book I read recently, "Attachments," by Rainbow Rowell.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Being a journalist means getting the story. Meaning, in turn, you have to be a people person, you have to be able to connect in conversation.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
I really don't pay mind to hashtags.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Smartsheet. Google Drive and Docs. VPN Server.
What's your favorite social network?
Pinterest. It's less influencing and more sharing of ideas.
Who do you wish followed you?
My dad ... he doesn't have social media.
Why did you become a journalist?
To share stories otherwise untold.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, I worked for my college newspaper where I did writing, photography and admin work.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I really enjoyed writing "Prose That Flows" for Tallahassee Magazine. Author Doug Alderson was a delight to interview and get to know.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be persistent. If you haven't heard back, follow up.
When's the best time to pitch you?
No preference.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
I was really pleased when my executive editor pitched and assigned to me a highlight of local bibliophiles and their libraries.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
My least favorite assignments are event coverage.
What's your favorite drink?
Coffee.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
My porch, the park or the beach.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I regularly read AP News. It's the most objective news outlet I'm aware of.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
I write for all beats which fall under lifestyle. Generally misconceived is the time required to take a story from interview to print.
